I bought this fabric from Spotlight during a lockdown when I needed to get to a minimum order amount (the order was to get Clare a couple of balls of yarn to finish off a crochet project).

It’s a substantial cotton/spandex knit, and I really loved the multiple colours and organic curves of the print. Sometimes I find cotton/spandex prints difficuult to match to a suitable pattern. They generally don’t have all that much drape. I looked for something that would look best with a little bit of structure, and decided that I couldn’t lose by giving the free Vera Top by Forget Me Not Patterns a try.

Oh, those sleeves! I love that they’re gathered only at the bottom, into those fabulous long cuffs! From the pattern page: Vera is a top pattern designed for knit fabrics that has a fun, full sleeve and an elegantly subtle V-neck. This take on a bishop sleeve features two different cuff options. Or, you can leave the cuff off for a simple flared sleeve! The V-neck and the gathering create extra interest and make Vera a little more challenging than a basic tee pattern. The Vera top is fitted at the bust, while mild shaping at the side seams creates a relaxed fit through the waist. The hemline is a mild high-low shape. Try it cool and summery with a viscose knit and no cuff, or consider making the long cuff in a warm merino.

Obviously I sewed the long cuff version, but it can be made with a shorter cuff, or no cuff at all. The v-neckline worked out perfectly. It’s a lovely width and depth.

This is a fun piece to have in my wardrobe. Like all garments with gathered sleeves, it could provide some changes in terms of layering for the weather. On the day I took these photos I layered a long mustard sleeveless jacket over it. Yesterday I wore it with jeans and yellow loafers – the weather was a bit warmer. This free pattern is very well drafted and the instructions were great – recommended.
