Simplicity 2642

With a forecast of 38 degrees, it was time to whip up another dress in Spotlight cotton voile.

Simplicity 2642 view A

The pattern is Simplicity 2642, view A. I made the maxi length dress – which in reality is about 40cm shorter than the maxi length given by the pattern. I generally don’t wear yellow, but the fabric was in the stash.

Other than shortening the dress considerably, it’s pretty much made straight out of the envelope. I cut a size 12 for myself in width but size 10 in bodice length. There are even pockets in the side front seams.

If I made it again I’d do the shoulder seam gathering differently to the instructions. The instructions have you gather along each shoulder seam to a specified length before sewing the front and back shoulder seams together. I think it would work better if the front and back shoulders were seamed together first, then gathered onto a piece of twill or other reinforcing tape of the appropriate length. I suspect that the sleeves would sit better if it was done that way.

That said, it’s comfortable and cool (if a little maternity-esque and maybe even a little nighty-esque). I recommend this pattern for a summer dress. It took me around three hours from cutting out to completion, and the pattern is available in sizes 4 to 22. There are also some halter-neck versions included – but I never wear halter-neck dresses, so you won’t be seeing that variation from me!

Stella’s summer sundress in action

Stella finally decided that she wanted to wear the crocheted sundress I completed in December.  Unfortunately she made that decision on a fairly cool day, so needed to wear a t-shirt underneath.  Still, it’s cute!

She’s watched me “model” my creations quite often, so knew that the next photo should be of the back of the dress.

Would anyone like some chocolate chip biscuit?

Okay, I’ll eat it myself then!

Vintage crochet Friday #50

Since I know how long it takes me to crochet a dress in little girl sizes for my daughters, I can only imagine the patience and time involved in crocheting one of these beauties.

I really fancy the pink one, although I like the lacyness of the yellow (which I would wear over a slip, of course). Crocheting a dress for myself (possibly this one) is on my “one day” list – but that day could be a long way away! In the meantime I’ll sigh over these.

Purple cobblestones

Last week Abbe of Copper Patch asked for help to make a quilt for a friend who is currently in hospital.  She provided a tutorial to make simple cobblestone blocks.  I whipped these ones up on the weekend – because honestly, they’re so quick to do!

Purple cobblestone blocks for Abbe

Abbe is making the quilt all in purple, since that is her friend’s favourite colour. If you feel inclined to help out by making a block or two, I think that there is still time. Pop over and visit Abbe for more details.

Speed limited

Somehow we’ve managed to use up all our cable internet allowance for the month and we’re speed limited.  I can’t even download my emails.  Could be something to do with discovering the joy of downloading audio podcasts for me and video podcasts for hubby…

So this is driving me nuts!  I am so reliant on my computer and the connection it provides to the crafty community.  Roll on 1st February!  And maybe it’s time to investigate upgrading our internet plan.

In the meantime, a vintage pattern I recently acquired.  It fired off some memory cells – Mum, did you make this cape for me at some stage?  It looks so familiar!

I love that it has the stamp of the fabric shop on the front – I don’t even remember it existing!  My blog will probably be quiet until we’re no longer speed limited.

New Look 6809 #4

Okay, hands up if you thought you’d see another incarnation of this pattern!  When the weather forecast for Friday was hot, hot, hot, I decided to make myself a cool dress from Spotlight cotton voile.  So yes, I pulled out New Look 6809 yet again.  This time I went for view E but without the hem ruffle, and I lengthened it to a dress.

New Look 6809

Eldest daughter was my photographer (standing on a chair to avoid the dreaded photo-looking-up-my-nose angle) and youngest daughter decided that she needed to be in every photo as well. Preferably if she could copy each pose.

After your comments on the last dress version of this pattern I decided to give a belt a go.  I sewed a simple tie belt from the same fabric, figuring that it wouldn’t contrast too much and might actually give me shape rather than draw attention to my thick midsection.

New Look 6809

Then Stella wanted to wear a belt as well.

New Look 6809

I wore it all day Friday and was comfortable and cool – even with the belt! You can see my first two versions of this pattern here and here.

New Look 6822

I’m slowly but surely working my way through the already-cut-out-just-waiting-to-be-sewn-up projects that are piled up on the right hand side of my sewing table.  I really want to get my works in progress finished, mainly so that I can work on new things (mostly on clothes for me).  This one is New Look 6822, for Clare.

New Look 6822

This pattern is for stretch fabrics, and I had the perfect sized piece of cotton interlock (from Crafty Mamas) in my stash. Style options include a dress with a hood and a top.

New Look 6822

This was super simple. The neckline is faced with bias binding and the front closes with a ribbon tie. The sleeves are easy to set in because the sleeve cap is gathered. I finished the sleeve and hem with a lettuce edge on my overlocker. It’s the first time I’ve done lettuce edging and it was easy and effective – yay!

New Look 6822

Clare screwed up her nose when she saw it since “it would have been much better if the flowers were pink”.  I was most unimpressed!  We have been having a few discussions lately about being grateful and thankful for all the things that we are lucky enough to have and receive.  Let’s hope that some of our chats are sinking in!

December practice squares

Whoops, I forgot to post my Kaffe Fassett Around the Block practice squares before the real ones done for Sheridan!  Part of the reason is that I was so keen to get stuck into the fabrics she’d sent me that I actually did the practice squares after doing Sheridan’s…

I did have to do more maths to make my squares 12.5 inches (that’s the size I’m working on for all the Kaffe practice ones I’m doing).  No major mistakes though, and these are the squares I ended up with.

Working with such a riot of colour and pattern can be a challenge but it’s a welcome education. I’m mainly using scraps and random fat quarters, so this quilt will just evolve over the course of Around the Block. Who knows how it will end up!

Around the Block – December for Sheridan

Yes I know, it’s mid-January, and I’ve only just finished my December Around the Block squares for our wonderful bee hostess Sheridan.  I was very thankful for having January as a catch-up month!  Sheridan had sent us a beautiful group of green and grey fabrics, with instructions to make blocks that were all about squares and symmetry.  Because the fabrics were so appealing I made four blocks – I couldn’t bear to not use any of those marvellous prints!

I found this such a restful, relaxing yet refreshing palette to work with. Thanks so much Sheridan! It was also fun working out how to do each block. I have started drawing up what I think I want to do on paper then doing the maths to figure out what size to cut each piece so that I’ll end up with the correctly sized block.

I’m working hard at the moment to finish off incomplete tasks, while interspersing a few new things to keep me fresh. 2010 will be the year of completing all projects and not overcommitting to new ones!
