owl and penguin and duck

After Karen’s daughters proudly showed off the penguins and ducks that they made during the last school holidays my girls clamoured to follow suit and make their own penguin and duck as well.  Clare does have her own sewing machine, and I figured that I should give her more opportunity to use it.  So we collected the pattern and our supplies and made a start.  Stella sewed two seams of her penguin then handed it over to me for completion.  At that stage there were tears – almost from me as well as from her – but in the end I relented and finished it off.

In the meantime, I sewed up the owl that was also included in the pattern.

And on the weekend, Clare was finally able to finish off her duck.  Thanks Karen for the duck fluff!

2014-03-01 16.23.53

There were tears involved in the making of the duck as well – poor Clare thought it was all finished and she had stuffed it before taking another look and realised that one wing was much, much higher than the other! Oh, the disappointment! I whipped out the unpick and she redid the offending wing. Other than helping in minor ways, Clare sewed the duck entirely herself, thanks in no small part to the wonderful instructions that Jodie provides.

2014-03-01 16.20.37

Lots of the materials came from Spotlight. Clare made the duck from a minkee type of fabric, which was harder to sew than a felt or polar fleece but has given a lovely result. We also used a minkee for the white stomach circles. The owl was made from wool that was in my stash, and the penguin was wool/viscose felt from Spotlight. BUT there is a cautionary tale about the quality of the (relatively expensive) felt.

2014-03-01 16.22.36

See all those weird circles appliqued on the back of the penguin? Do you know what they are and why they are there? They are patches – over the many spots where the felt has begun to separate and start to form holes once the penguin had been stuffed. I am VERY unhappy with the quality of this felt, which was bought from the roll and advertised as wool/viscose. I must get around to giving Spotlight some feedback about it. Luckily, the kids aren’t too perturbed (mostly because I did all the patching).

2014-03-01 16.23.26

We are all thrilled with our owl and penguin and duck now that they are done! Great pattern Jodie – just remind me to book my youngest into a class run by someone else the next time that she wants to learn to sew.

And a quick shout out to a couple of blog posts that I thought were particularly helpful when I was blog browsing on the train and tram this morning:

Christy on sewing fast (because I nodded the whole way through)

LiEr on drafting sleeves (incredibly informative and so well explained!)

and Anne said some really lovely things about me and my blog this week – thanks so much Anne, I am incredibly touched.

If you were wondering what the Lekala-alongers were up to, we’re still cutting out this week.  Well, some of us are actually sewing, and some are still getting fabric, but by the end of the week we all aim to at least have our jackets cut out.  Fingers crossed!

the toy formerly known as pickle

Meet Patchie – the soft toy formerly known as Pickle.

Patchie

8 year old Clare sewed Patchie all by herself, with just the occasional piece of advice from me (and I put the eyes in for her). Jodie‘s instructions were excellent (and very entertaining), and Clare is extremely pleased with her new toy.

Patchie

This is a terrific beginner’s project – look at what a great result you can achieve, even if you’re only 8 years old! Patchie accompanied Clare to church this morning where she was proudly displayed to anyone who would listen (and a whole lot of other people as well). Thanks Jodie for such a great pattern and well done to Clare from a very proud mother!

they pop up everywhere

You’ve possibly seen these three little maids over at Jodie’s.  Snap!  I’ve made some too!  Let me introduce you.  As named by my children, Little Pink (claimed by Stella):

Little Blue (claimed by Clare):

and last but by no means least, Little Green (who must be mine).

IMG_0791

Jodie has written another great pattern and my little maids even look a lot like hers!

IMG_0797

Too cute to resist! Thanks Jodie for letting me use my red pen on your pattern (I was actually a teacher in a former life and still have a fondness for that pen) and be part of the process. If you’d like your own copy of this sweet little pattern you can harangue your local quilt or craft store to get one in for you, check out these stockists or else you can find it online here.

Isn’t there a whole lot of Gilbert and Sullivan running around in your head now too?

Humming away

The machine has been humming away.  Lots of things are in progress, but nothing has been finished.  That’s the sort of week it’s been.  Easily distractible, jumping from one thing to the other.  But all in the nicest way.

Sue Ross BOM - cutting the setting strips

I’ve done a little more work on my Material Obsession Sue Ross BOM quilt. The setting strips are all cut. Block 9 has been fused into place and is now waiting for my mum’s machine to applique it down.

Sue Ross BOM Block 9

I’ve cut and fused circles onto another two blocks, taking the easy way out to do raw edge applique rather than hand sewing.

Sue Ross BOM in progress

There are leftover blocks from Leah’s wedding quilt all arranged and waiting to be assembled into a small zig zag quilt (which I’ll probably keep).

zig zags again

Add to the mix a little pattern testing:

and a little more pattern testing.

Drape dress toile

Then there are the cut-out-for-the-past-month-and-still-waiting tops to sew.

I’ve got fabric and pattern sorted for the MPB Men’s Shirt Sew-Along (finally something for Mr T) starting next month.

And some plastic tubs of yarn to catalogue for my Ravelry stash (thanks for the reminder Amy!)

So there is lots happening, nothing finished, nothing likely to be finished for a few days yet as it all happends in snippets of time in between school holiday activities.  But at least things are humming!  And I’m happy with that.

Birthday Ooshka

It was Stella’s birthday yesterday.  I made her an Ooshka Babushka.

Ooshka for Stella

These are something between a softie and a cushion.

Ooshka for Stella

My little princess was very taken with it. She is cuddling it, using it as a pillow, and snuggling up to it.

I also made her a birthday party dress – stay tuned for my next post!

(Also, thanks to the people who left me such beautiful comments on my earlier post.  I wasn’t intending to fish for compliments but many of you left lovely ones – thank you!)

Unzipped

After making zipper-mouth monsters for the Clare and Stella last week I thought I’d better make one for me.

Monster for me

This time I added some crocheted trim courtesy of an old doily (oh, I found it hard to take the scissors to it, but after a few snips it became strangely satisfying – now I know why CurlyPops has so much fun with old crocheted tablecloths).  And what does my monster say to everyone who is reading?

Zipper-mouth says...

Zipper-mouth monster patterns will be officially launched by Jodie at The Stitches & Craft Show in Melbourne from 5th – 9th May.

Monstrous!

Yesterday I did a little test-sewing for Jodie.  Two zipper-mouth monsters, pattern ready to be released at the Melbourne Stitches and Craft Show which is coming up very, very soon (5th – 9th May). I could barely tear them away from my daughters to photograph them.

IMG_2455

Guess which belongs to which – yes, the pink is Clare’s and the purple is Stella’s. Stella knows what hers says – it’s very cute when I ask her what her monster is saying to her.

IMG_2452

They’re made from the most divine wool, a bit like blanketing except lighter, and a heavier weight cotton for the trousers. Although you could make them in quilting cottons, I think these slightly thicker fabrics are a better choice.

IMG_2449

These were super fun to make and quick and simple – just my sort of softie! Although I love to play with softies, I don’t generally love making them – but for some reason I do especially like this one! I’m going to make one for myself as well.  Clare had loads of input into the fabric and decoration combinations for these two.  I really do adore the zipper-mouth and the little sayings within – mind you the ones that Jodie makes tend to be a little more debonair (and even slightly risque) than these ones.

IMG_2456

So if you are looking for a quick and super-fun softie to make, you can’t go past a zipper-mouth monster – whether for children or for adults! Stella loves hers so much that it even went into the bath with her last night – I don’t actually recommend that though.  It did get a decent spin in the washing machine before she demanded it back to sleep with her last night.  Clare slept with hers as well…

Now I’d better get back to some more secret test-sewing – I’m up to around nine items already that I haven’t been able to blog!  I am SO looking forward to the publication of a certain book.

Fancy a cuppa?

I seem to have a bit of a pattern testing gig going on.  This time for the omnipotent Jodie.  Fancy a cuppa?

Teapot and cup - pattern by Ric Rac by you.

This extremely delightful pattern is going to be released at the Stitches and Craft Show in Melbourne in March.

Teapot and cup - pattern by Ric Rac by you.

I think that it is absolutely too cute for words.  So does Stella.

Fancy a cuppa? by you.

It’s been difficult to pry it away from her since I finished it!  Jodie and many other wonderful bloggers will be hawking their creative wares and sharing their talents at the show.  I can’t wait to go along!  It’s at the Royal Exhibition Buildings in Carlton (eek!) Melbourne Showgrounds this year, and is being run by the team from Living Creatively.  Now I’d better head off to make another cup and saucer so that the girls can have a cuppa together.

I’m a winner (well, sometimes)

Lucky me, I was a winner in Audrey and Maude’s recent pattern giveaway, and received these two sweet softie patterns.

Audrey & Maude softie patterns by you.

I saw these in real life at the Quilt and Craft fair recently.  They’re now added to my to-make list!  Which first … I think maybe one of the robots.  Thanks so much to Louise and Cathy for their generosity (and their talent – I love these softies)!

In today’s mail was the latest blog VIP swatch mailout from Amitie.

Amitie August 08 fabric swatches by you.

These are all from Anna Maria Horner’s Garden Party line.  What beautiful saturated colours and swirling lines.  Will I need some more pieces I wonder?  I’ve done a little more work on the loopy loops too.

loopy loops with edging - detail by you.

They’re all now edged, thanks to Sarah’s excellent instructions.  They’ll probably be a scarf for a little while – at least until I crochet some more loopy loops to join together into a blanket.  This length is made up of 105 loops.  The edging yarn is also scrap stash yarn – hence the change of colour half way through.

Kitty – Softie for Mirabel

Why do I procrastinate for so long – it probably only took about four hours from cutting out to the final stitch of embroidery.  Here is my Softie for Mirabel.

This is Kitty, made from a Wee Wonderfuls pattern (with permission to donate for charity auction).  Of course, Stella seems quite taken by Kitty, and Clare wants one as well.  Looks like there is more softie making in my future.

I didn’t complete any of the other crafty tasks I’d set myself over the weekend, but instead managed to spend some hours cuddling a friend’s beautiful one-week old baby.  Newborns are so tiny and precious!  That wispy hair!  That fuzzy gaze!  Those slow-motion movements!  Stella seemed huge in comparison, as she climbed onto chairs and tables (and promptly fell off).
