A fourth Vicki
I just did a quick google search for Style Arc Vicki so I’d be all organised to make the appropriate links when writing this blog post. The image search options quickly showed me that I have already sewed this pattern three times! You can read about the previous versions here and here.
There’s something about this pattern that keeps drawing me to it. I like the V neckline and how it’s sewn with the centre front seam, the swingy fit, the interesting angled back shoulder seams.
I used linen for this version and sewed size 14, and lengthened it at the hemline as much as the fabric I was working with allowed. It’s very straightforward to sew.
But none of the four versions I’ve sewn – including this one which was sewn and photographed last year – are still in my wardrobe! On reflection I don’t think that I’ve managed to get the colour/print/length just right. Size 14 is definitely best for me in this pattern, and I do prefer it lengthened as it is here. It’s often been a bit of a wardrobe orphan, sewn from fabrics that were in stash but then without the right coordinating bottom to wear with it. I haven’t finished with this pattern though. I will just put a bit more thought into colour/print selection in the future, thinking about what I’ll wear it with. I’ve realised that I don’t often wear sleeveless tops; if the weather is hot enough for sleeveless, I prefer a dress.
From the Style Arc website: This fashionable swing top looks great worn with your crop pants. The “V” neck and Interesting back yoke treatment adds interest and sets this apart from a basic top. Thank you Sharmaine for your designs! FABRIC SUGGESTION: Crepe, Silk, Cotton or Scuba
I think these look great on you; all four of them (caveat that the white one doesn’t fit as well). I am attracted to this pattern after seeing your use of it.
Too short
To be honest (& hopefully not rude) I’m not loving it. The line drawing of the top shows a slightly more fitted silhouette (than this iteration, at least) and I think that this top would suit you better if it matched that line. It looks a little over fited in the high chest and shoulder and that in combination with the angle dart creates a concavity there.
I must say i don’t like that particular dart placement as to me it always looks like a retrofit. I think I would like this top better with the dart rotated to a French dart. Or you could use that centre seam to add funky centre darts.
A very nice top and the color is fabulous on you! Make some more.
Maybe you should lengthen it to a dress.
