and the sewing drought has broken
What a long two weeks! No time to make anything new, and I’ve missed it. Repairs and alterations are absolutely not the same. I was pleased to have the time to organise aspects of my sewing room – and I’ll show you my sewing room in a later blog post – but it was wonderful to put the pedal to the floor yesterday and get something made.
When I saw this (slightly creepy?) cat printed cotton/spandex knit at Darn Cheap Fabrics a few weeks ago, I pounced upon it. I knew that both my daughters would be very keen for me to make them something with it. However, I knew that it would need something to tone it down a little, which is why I paired it with the solid blue cotton/spandex knit. I had been wondering what pattern would be a good match, so when I saw the Modkid Melanie pdf pattern pop up on facebook last week, I bought it straight away.
I cut this at size 8/9, and made it as per the pattern other than adding a neckband in the blue cotton/lycra knit. The pattern had the neckline simply turned over and stitched in place – I wanted the contrast, and I prefer a neckband finish to a simple hem. Hems are all twin needled in blue. The leggings are Go To Leggings in the full length option. They are a little too long, but Clare likes the look with them scrunched around her ankles. So who am I to argue?
The pattern gives the option of three sleeve lengths – short (as I made them), elbow length, and long. The side inserts and gathered pockets are fun and easy to construct. And yes, Stella wants one too. Maybe later this week!
Great little outfit on your daughter, the dress pattern has some nice touches like the big pockets. I am in love with the cat fabric, I’ll have to show my daughter it!!
Yes, that cat fabric is creepy but in a totally awesome cool way. 🙂 Clare looks so stylish and adorable at the same time. I hope I didn’t just make her cringe. hahaha
Firstly – I am totally in love with the fabric print, and the dress looks great (I bet it would be really comfortable).
But I have a question – more like a request. Would you be able to do a post for amateur/newbie sewers like myself, to help us understand the difference between the fabrics that you use? For instance, what’s the difference between Poplin and Drill when they are both 100% cotton? I know a lot of your readers probably already know this, and they would probably just suggest to me to google the differences, but considering you use the fabrics, maybe it’s better to read about the differences from your point of view. How funny! I made a pair of leggings for my daughter out of that odd kitty stretch fabric. as soon as I saw it, I too pounced, then hesitated cos all those cat faces are a bit freaky, but like yourself figured my girl would love it and lo and behold she did. I like the look of the leggings pattern you used as they appear to be a bit more generous with ankle width than the new look pattern I used. you have made a great outfit!
Oh it looks fab! Thanks for checking my crazy cat lady version out – its such awesome fabric isn’t it, every time I wear my top I get people asking where it came from! I hope you’ve enough left for something for you – I’ve plenty to make a tank for summer!
