Sally’s Solveig

During the last year I became a little addicted to Wollmeise.  The colour variations in this hand-dyed German yarn are incredibly vibrant and absolutely divine.  When I discovered that I was “buying” for my cousin Sally in our family Kris Kringle, I decided to crochet her a scarf.  I started this in October, and it was completed on Christmas Eve.  Just cutting it a little bit too fine really.

The pattern is Solveig, and the yarn Wollmeise 100% Superwash merino in Campari Orange. As seems to have become my habit, I played yarn chicken with this one and lost. Luckily a Raveller came to the rescue and I was able to purchase an extra skein the week before Christmas. Hooray! This is a lovely cross between a scarf and a shawl, and it can be worn in different ways.

This was one of those times where I managed to match the yarn to the pattern perfectly. I adore the texture and the shifting colourway.

It was rather difficult to give this one away. Luckily, I knew that Sally would understand the work that had gone into it (she’s a knitter) – and she loved it!  More details are on my Ravelry project page here.

2011 wrap-up #1 – sewing for others

I’ve been reading lots of sewing wrap-ups around the blogs.  It’s quite impressive to see just how much people have sewn, how much they have grown, how much they have developed their skills, and how they have identified what it really is they like to make and how they like to go about it.  Inspirational stuff!  I didn’t really intend to do a wrap-up myself, but found myself playing with mosaics this morning and it looks as though I am going to show you what I’ve made after all!

2011 sewing for others

This first mosaic is clothing I’ve sewn for others – Mum, my husband, Clare, Stella, and my cousin Freya.  Clare is definitely the person I sew for most – poor Stella!  Although she is the eventual recipient of everything that I make for Clare, so I suppose that’s okay.  She loves getting Clare’s outgrown clothes.

I made any New Year’s Resolutions or written myself a to-do list for this year (although as I type this blog post one is beginning to form in my mind – stop that!); I just want to be more mindful.  Mindful of what is already in stash before I buy any more fabric (the shelves are currently full to bursting).  Mindful of the patterns that I already own before I buy any more patterns.  Mindful of the yarn that I have before I get more.  I’m not banning myself from buying anything, but want to be more mindful and less impulsive.  And I want to apply mindfulness to the rest of life as well.  Let’s see how I go!
