Diagonal squares

Another addition to the colourful crocheted cushion pile amassing on the sewing room couch – diagonal squares.

Well, it will be a cushion once it has a back and stuffing! Yarn primarily 8ply basic (100% wool) from Spotlight. Pattern from the July 09 edition of Hip to Hook, available from Sarah London here.  Time needed – a school council meeting, an evening at book group, a night at the Northern Craft Bonanza and assorted stolen fifteen minute crocheting opportunities.

I made it a little larger than the pattern. Look at all those ends that need to be woven in…

And guess what? After the moaning and groaning of my last post I tossed the name tag back into cold water to soak for a day or two – and the red dye seems to have dispersed!  I’m still waiting for it to dry properly then I’ll examine it more closely to see if it’s still swap-worthy or whether I need to make it again.  Thanks so much for your sympathy and suggestions on what might help.  I know that you all shared my pain!

miscellaneous, musings

Mucked it up

After spending a number of hours embroidering and crocheting a name tag for Sew It Together and patting myself on the back extensively over my own brilliance I gave it a final press with the iron to properly affix it to its stiffening and backing.  And I scorched it.  So I soaked it in cold water hoping to remove the scorch marks.  Now the red cotton has run.  I’ve stuffed it up and have to do it all again.  Which means a trip to the shops to get some more embroidery floss as well.  Not Happy Jan!

See, I do share my disasters as well as my successes.

Huperheroes

A couple of years ago I made superhero capes for Clare and many of her second-cousins for Christmas.  Stella was only a little baby that Christmas so she got a bib.  In the last few weeks she has been snaffling Clare’s cape to play superheroes much to Clare’s chagrin, so last weekend I dragged out the poplin and asked Stella to choose colours for her own cape.

queen capes

The capes are made from Puking Pastille’s tutorial.  One side has a crown, for playing queens and princesses according to my girls, and the other has their initial for playing superheroes.

Stella has been happily running around the house and garden with her big sister ever since, calling out “Huperheroes” as she goes!

Don’t all huperheroes wear rabbit ears at this time of year?

Vintage crochet Friday #58

You know, each time I select a new photo for Vintage crochet Friday I worry about whether I have shown it to you already.  Maybe I should figure out a better system of keeping track than trawling through all my previous posts?  So I hope that we haven’t seen this one yet!

crochet, my creative space

My creative space…

As always there has been a little bit going on in my creative space – some connected to the-worst-kept-secret-in-blogland, so I can’t show you any of it!  However, there are four crochet-in-progress projects on the hook (some dating back months).

I have admired Rose Hip’s crochet-edged pillowcases for some time, so when I saw that You Go Girl! was running a pillowcase crochet-along it was just the impetus I needed to make a couple myself.

My creative space - pillowcase crochetalong

Fabric from stash (originally from Spotlight), cotton yarn (possibly too thick) from Bendigo Woollen Mills.  Pillowcases made and awaiting edging.

Fingerless gloves

There was quite a bit of yarn left over once I completed my Ginger Anne Scarf so what better to do than to crochet some coordinating fingerless gloves?

Ginger fingerless gloves

These were super quick to make and really quite simple. They’re essentially a rectangle seamed down one side with an opening left for the thumb.

Ginger fingerless gloves

The pattern is Lacy Fingerless Gloves by Christie Pruitt, which you can find as a free download here if you are on Ravelry.  Clare has put in an order for a pair for school and a pair for fun.

Around the block, patchwork

Around The Block – March for Bronwyn

Woo hoo!  The March blocks were finished a week ago, and they are already back in Bronwyn‘s hands.  She asked for wonky stars of Kaffe Fassett fabrics that would sparkle in the night sky.  I had to practice first of course, and delved into my Kaffe stash to make some blocks for my practice sampler quilt.

Wonky star

Not bad for a first go, I think, although I should probably have reversed the fabrics so that the star was floating in clouds. The next one has stripes along some of the points, but would have benefitted from a more subdued choice of background fabric.

Wonky star

So on to the squares I made for Bronwyn! They are all different sizes. The first one is 12.5″ square. I adore the feature fabric and couldn’t bear to waste any of it so pieced the leftovers together with some of the solid to make the central shape.

12.5 inch star

This one is 6.5″ square.

As is this one. I attempted to add some piecing to the points but much of it was lost in the seam allowances.

The last is 8.5″ square. What a fantastic print!

And here they are together.

ATB March - Wonky Stars for Bronwyn

Bronwyn sent loads of Kaffe fabrics to choose from and it was extremely difficult for me to pop them all in the return envelope – I really do think that they are one of the most wonderful fabric ranges around! The saturation of colours is almost unequalled.  I have recently come across some superb Australian Aboriginal prints from M & S Textiles  that I think could be used in a similar way to Kaffe prints – lots of colour and pattern.  Although I’m still trying to figure out why they cost around A$24 per metre to buy here in Australia where they are manufactured yet cost around US$11 (or less) per yard to buy in the US….

You can see all the blocks that have been made for Around The Block over here.  There are so many fantastic blocks and the finished quilts are going to be just brilliant.

My creative space…

As usual, I have a few things on the go.  I need one of Jodie’s craft clocks to give me an extra four (or more) hours in every day.  Some of which I would like to spend sleeping.

My creative space - March 18

I am going to Sew It Together in May, and Gypsy has organised a Name Tag Swap.  My recipient’s tag is about half done – it’s still in need of more french knots and crocheted edging.

Araucania Anne scarf

Another crocheted scarf.  It’s from the same pattern as the Ginger scarf I made a couple of weeks ago, but this time in worsted weight Araucania cotton.

Anne scarf - worsted Aracunia cotton

Of course the weather is now autumn at it’s finest and there is no way that I’ll be wearing a scarf for a month or two. But this one will be ready and waiting!

Anne scarf - worsted Aracunia cotton

The yarn weight makes a significant difference to the look of the scarf – here are my two Anne scarves side by side.

Anne scarves

This is such a lovely soft cotton, and it drapes beautifully. It’s a good go-to pattern if you need to make a gift, as it works in most yarn weights and compositions and it’s easy to memorise. The portability factor is high!

Peggy, thanks again for the gift of this wonderful yarn!  I will think of you whenever I wear this scarf.
