My first finished quilt!
Finally, I have made a REAL quilt – you know, one that is pieced together, has wadding in the middle, has been quilted and had binding added. It’s finished, it’s done – and would you believe I actually finished this in mid February and haven’t posted it until now! The suspense has been killing me…
It’s the Tree and Bird Baby Quilt pattern by Craft Apple. I was one of her pattern testers, and learned how to do free motion machine quilting following her directions. I probably should have practiced more on scrap pieces rather than the real thing, but it was a great way to learn. My quilting was definitely better by the time I got to the end! Starting off in the feature circle probably wasn’t the best of ideas…
and I am SO tempted to unpick those wobbly spirals of stitching. But then I think it will serve as a terrific reminder of the learning process. Because eventually, the stitching was like this:
Love that meandering stipple! The beautiful fabrics are from Ballarat Patchwork. I didn’t do too bad a job of machine sewing the binding and mitred corners either.
Considering I did this with my twenty-year old sewing machine and a newly purchased free-motion embroidery foot (no fancy stitch regulator for me) I am pleased. It was a great learning experience – Linda’s instructions are clear and thorough, and it’s such a pretty design. I learned to do raw edge machine applique too. It’s always a pleasure to test sew for Linda. A terrific project!
Hooray! It’s beautiful! I love the fabrics you chose. I’m so glad you test-sewed for me! Thanks so much! Your pattern will be on it’s way soon! :o)
Ooh, that’s lovely 🙂
Lara, how proud you must be – A real quilt and you did it all ! I am soooo impressed. Bring it along on the wekend for show and tell.
This pattern testing gig just continues to grow!
Your quilt looks lovely! And that looks like a great pattern. I’ll have to check it out.
I tried to learn free motion quilting about a month ago. I always get way to frustrated and put it away. Yours looks great. I have no fancy machine and so I am still fighting the tension.
It’s beautiful! one day I hope to be as accomplished as you!
Congrats! your quilt is beautiful. You did a wonderful job.
love it love it love it…It is just gorgeous. I was just at craftapple congrats to her for getting the pattern down and now I see how this quilt looks and its just amazing and just so beautiful. I can’t imagine its your first one. Did you do the quilting yourself? I’m a newbie at this also but I’m getting into it. Am doing free-motion quilting on my daughters spring/summer quilt….Just hoping I finish soon before summer goes…LOL.
It is wonderful so wonderful! Great job.
Oh Lara – you’ve done a beautiful job. I love it!
Lara it is fantastic! I can’t believe that you are new to quilting 🙂
Go you! That’s amazing for a first go at quilting. I fear my first attempt will be capital-D-Dreadful. I’m tempted to put away the quilt top (when I finish it) indefinitely. Or at least until I get a new machine and some lessons!
Ooo, this is lovely – well done! I dream of making a quilt as good as this one.
Congratulations! That is absolutely lovely. It looks amazingly complicated. I want one!
Your quilt is fabulous! You’ve given me fresh hope – I also own a twenty-something year old sewing machine and recently purchased the free motion quilting foot for it. I have to try this now!
Your quilt looks fantastic. There is nothing wrong with your quilting either. You must be thrilled with the final product, I would be.
Thats gorgeous! You did a fantasic job. Another thing for me to learn i think!
Beautiful! Such lovely fresh colours too – perfect for Spring!

This is absolutely lovely!! Don’t remove a STITCH!!! It is PERFECT!!!!! As soon as I saw it, I was in awe AND jealous….my quilting doesn’t look that good!
Wonderful workwomanship. I think you did an excellent job let alone it was your 1st go at quilting. Well done the fabrics are so subtle and beautiful. They remind me of a misty morning in England in an orchard as the dew is burning off and the sun gets higher. 🙂
Congratulations on your first quilt, Lara! It turned out beautiful and you should be very proud. I hope this will be the first of many quilts to come from your talented hands.
You did a beautiful job on that quilt. Amazing for a first quilt.
great job, cant believe it’s just yr first
It’s stunning! Great job!
That is a beautiful quilt! I love the softness of the colors, they go great with the pattern!
Gorgeous. I’m inspired, I should stop making excuses about my old machine and go get me a free-motion foot. BTW I think the feature circle looks just great as is and I’m glad you didn’t unpick. Perfectly concentric circles would be bland!!
I am thinking of doing my first quilt for Poppy but wasn’t sure. You did such a great job for a first time and with the old faithful sewing machine. Beautiful work – as always.
This is wonderful! And it’s your first effort at machine quilting? Doesn’t look like it! Looks pretty damn near perfect to me.
wow good job!!!!!!!!!!!! can’t believe its first go at free motion
oh and I saw your stasth on sew mama sew…Im so ashamed that mine is so messy! oh dear you’ve inspired me with your neatness!
Corrie;)
It took me about 5 goes to actually see these lovely photos – for some reason my computer wouldn’t show the pics…! So I’ve been stalking back, and reading everyone else’s comments and just DYING to see the quilt – and now I HAVE!! Your free motion is really lovely – it looks so good – warm and cuddly – great work!
Amazing! For your first quilt it is incredible, you really are a great sewer. What did you use to baste the quilt becuase it looks so smooth? Basting is the bain of quilting for me.
Congratulations
