Fabric printing at Brown Owls

Art is not my strong point – I always lean more towards textiles.  And last night’s Brown Owl’s project was a little arty!  But so much fun – I’d never have had a go at textile printing without Kirsty and Pip to organise things and cheer me on – and it was great.  A lovely way to move out of my comfort zone!

Fabric printing at Brown Owls - practice by you.

Gemma told us all what we needed to do and showed us some that she had prepared earlier.  We made stamps from self-adhesive rubber (a bit like mouse pads, but with adhesive on one side) to our own design – which was the hardest part for me of course, coming up with something artistic and creative.  In the end I borrowed an applique image from one of the Brown Owls craft books.  Once cut out, we adhered the stamps to half of a CD or DVD case.  The use of recycled materials was fantastic – three cheers to Kirsty for thinking of such original ways to reuse what would have otherwise been waste materials.  Next step was to have a practice on some waste fabric to get the paint consistency right.  I really like my practice piece though – I’m going to use it in something I make at a later date!  And then it was on to printing on a singlet.

Not too bad for a novice, I reckon!  There are more photos around the blogs and over here.  I brought my stamp and some left-over paint home and Clare is chomping at the bit to have a go at fabric printing herself.  Yay for Brown Owls!
