A little light reading
I have always been quite keen on magazines. It started with Dolly way back in my early teens, progressed (I use the term loosely) to Cleo and Cosmo, then made it to fashion magazines as well. I always devoured Mum’s copies of Women’s Weekly, Woman’s Day and New Idea (back in the days before they weren’t just Hollywood gossip). While I was reading all of those magazines, my brother was reading every fishing, hunting and shooting magazine he could get his hands on – Dad was reading National Geographic and every 4WD and outback magazine he could get his hands on. Nowadays my taste in magazines has changed. Here is a sample of my latest reading matter:
This is a fairly international mix of mags – the UK, USA and Australia are all represented! I finally stumbled across Sew Hip in my local newsagent. So far I quite like it. I subscribe to Mixtape, Threads, Sewing with Stitches Australia (formerly Australian Stitches), Crochet Today! and Inspirations. Stitch is quite an impressive sewing magazine in its first issue – I’ll be interested to see how it develops. I also subscribe to Interweave Crochet (the best crochet magazine around, in my opinion). And I’ve been known to buy a copy of Homespun and Quilter’s Companion. Despite my addiction to craft on the net, there is still nothing quite like having those pages between your hands, flipping back and forth and poring over the photos, devouring the articles. Lot of inspiration, dreams, and learning contained within the covers. And I occasionally even make one of the projects! My biggest problem is finding the time to read them properly inbetween my other commitments and desires.
Dare I ask what the cover price of Sew Hip is over here? (I probably don’t want to know). I used to be a magaholic too, have been through the Dolly/Cleo phase, the gourmet food/wine phase, all the home improvement type mags, along with several crafty phases. I have mostly broken myself of the habit now, thank goodness, though I do buy Mixtape and have the occasional checkout relapse 🙂
Oh yes, Sew Hip, despite the fact they don’t seem to have a proofreader (I’m so picky) is a really good one. I looked at Stitch when it was at the newsagent, but I resisted.
And I totally agree about Interweave Crochet. It’s a beaut magazine.
Less than 24 hours to go! Can’t wait!
Oh, I know what you mean – I have a serious magazine addiction too! There’s a new crochet one coming out in the UK at the end of March and I’m counting the days! I keep checking the calendar to see how much longer I’ve got to wait!
I love mags too…and I love to re-read them, so consequently I have boxes and boxes of old magazines. My DH found a box of Good Housekeeping in the garage…dated 1970’s.
Are you prone to hang on to them too?
Thansk for the heads up. I have been keeping an eye out for Sew Hip. I will start trawling through all my local newsagents.
What a lovely mix of magazines. I was a Beano, Dandy, + Whizzer and Chips fan myself. I have progressed to craft magazines. I get Sew Hip too- (the red jacket is gorgeous) but I only get others if there is something I want to make in them.
What great reading. I have a subscription to Sew Hip and find it’s good but like another comment the proof reading is shocking. Not sure if the momentum has gone from it also with the change in editor but will wait and see. Another magazine that I love is Marie Claire Idees. I can get it easily in Montreal and it’s the one reason that I have French lessons each week so I can read it properly but even without the language it’s difficult not to be inspired.
Hi Lara
Where do you get your interweave from?? Out here in the sticks there are NO crafty mags, I used to get Ottobre but they started rehashing designs.. Plus the yarn has got me sucked in well and truly!
Oh how I love my magazines! I read them and re-read them, they go on the shelf but not for long before they are out again and strewn all around the house …. oh how I love my magazines!!!! We will have to compare mag stashes next week!
Lovely to meet you last night. (I was the one sitting beside you at dinner…)
I’m not a magazine girl myself… I’m more a book person. Your pile of current reading made me laugh…. it’s not hard to work out howe you like to spend your time.
I’m off to have a look around…
