Mum’s New Toy
Firstly, thank you all so much for the lovely comments about my afghan/rug/blanket (what IS the best word for this? The CAL called it an afghan; I’ve always referred to these as rugs, but maybe they are really blankets … anyway, I digress). I have already started the 2009 afghan, but will save those photos for a later post. My blog has been a little quiet for the past few days while I’ve been visiting my parents in the country. We’ve all had a nasty virus, so haven’t managed to do lots of the fun things that we normally do with my parents and the kids, but the crafting has continued on unabated. Finally I have had the opportunity to play with Mum’s New Toy:
This is the Husqvarna Viking Sapphire 850. What a lovely machine! I’ve spent some time learning how to use it (it took me twice as long as usual to make a dress since I had to continually refer to the manual) and I am very impressed with how far sewing machine technology has come in the past twenty years. Mum’s last machine was circa 1974 and my machine is circa 1989, so to have the joy of automatic needle up/down, pressure sensors, walking feet, programmable stitches, etc etc etc has been quite exciting (if not a little stressful). I am yet to play with the applique stitches or to program embroidery stitches or text – after all, it is Mum’s machine, not mine! – but am looking forward to finally getting my quilt finished. Although tonight I’ve had a little too much red wine with dinner, so it may have to wait until my next visit …
Oh my I don’t think I would have the courage for such an advanced machine. Technology seems to dislike me. LOL It does look very swish though. I hope your Mum has a lot of fun with it.
Yes Lara I know the correlation with drinking & craft – for me it is disastrous – especially over a 500 degree flame!!
I’m supposed to be finished off a crocheted blanket tonight, but after two glasses of Zibibbo bubbly, I can’t see straight enough to crochet! Hic!
Your mum’s machine is lovely. I’ve heard great things about the Sapphire.
Wow that is a mean looking machine. Glad to hear you have been enjoying your holiday time.
That’s so funny. I know Husqvarna from chainsaws. I wonder if they’re the same. That would be … odd.
That is one tricked out sewing machine!
It’s amazing what the newer technology can do for your sewing. I was fortunate enough to be given a new Elna machine this year by my mum- it’s not half as fancy as your mum’s but it does have needle down, which I find fantastic, as well as some new stuff and compared to the 1970’s machine I had previously it is unbelievable and I’ve found my sewing has improved incredibly. It’s made sewing so much easier.
That is the machine I almost bought. I wanted one for quilting but thought it would be nice to have some of the embroidery features as well. I ended up buying the MegaQuilter by Husqvarna instead, which is a basic machine but industrial strength so it goes fast. I decided since I wanted the machine mostly for quilting I didn’t need the Sapphire but I was this…..close to getting it.
If you click on my name I believe it’s at the top of my blog if you want a look.

I lied the machine is halfway down but you can see some of the crocheted washcloths you inspired me to make for gifts.
Ooh, yeah! And I agree with those who don’t drink and drive (a sewing machine) – even one glass of wine makes for wobbly stitches, pish, posh!
I have this machine, and I love it! I know what you mean about the book! My last machine was also a Viking, and I purchased it in ’82. Also computerized. She’ll enjoy it!
This machine is on my dream wish list. I haven’t taken it for a test drive yet. But the features sound wonderful. Some day….maybe. For now I’ll use my Kenmore.
I love this machine so much that I bought the Topaz. It’s the Sapphire but with embroidery. No regrets at all.
