New Look 6648

New Look 6648 is one of Pattern Review’s Best Patterns of 2011.  As soon as I read the “best patterns” article, I popped this pattern on my to-make list – just in time for Spotty to have a half-price patterns sale.  Score!  Interestingly, this pattern was first reviewed back in November 2006, so it has obviously taken some time to gain momentum in the online sewing community.  But gain momentum it certainly has!

This is view A, the short dolman sleeved version. All versions have a gathered waist/hip band. It’s simple to make with just four pattern pieces – back, front, neckband, and waist/hip band. I made size 12, but probably could have downsized to a 10. I must remember that for next time.

It is loose and drapey, but because it then comes into the fitted yet gathered waist/hip band, the top still has shape. I think that it is quite flattering, and it’s certainly comfortable. The fabric is a stretch mystery from the Darn Cheap $2 per metre table. It’s very soft, and I suspect that it contains viscose (maybe even bamboo) and lycra among its component fibres. It worked very nicely in this style. The neckline is rather wide, so I have attached strap keepers at each shoulder seam to avoid bra strap exposure. It took around two hours to make, including cutting out. Easy peasy!

Unsurprisingly, I already have view B cut out – the v-neck, longer fitted sleeved version. Here’s keeping my fingers crossed that I will squeeze in some machine time tomorrow.
