Butterick 3124 view C
Meh. Don’t like it. Doesn’t fit properly.
Butterick 3124 is a Sandra Betzina “Today’s Fit” pattern, which means that it has different sizing to the usual. I made a size “D”, which corresponded perfectly to my bust and waist measurements. But sadly, it doesn’t fit me. You can get a better idea when I’ve got my hands on my hips.
I just look big and matronly. It’s too short – I did my usual petite adjustments to the body and sleeve length, and shouldn’t have. The bust darts are too low, the shoulders are too wide, and overall it’s not a success.
Before I saw these photos I thought I might get away with it – now I think no way.
The mesh wasn’t too difficult to sew, and I still have loads left. I’m going to make another top in a more traditional t-shirt shape without any bust darts – there is lots of stretch in this fabric, so it should be okay. This one is going to the op shop.
Hi Lara, Is it rude of me to agree? It is a tad matronly and the view with your arms out shows the strange shape. Having said that, I went shopping yesterday with Miss jem and she tried on heaps of shirt that did that very same thing so it seems most shops don’t have your level of quality control – we ended up buying gloves!
I don’t think that it is too bad. During daily activities you wouldn’t be still long enough to notice the shape.
BTW I love watching you make all of these different patterns. How do you choose which ones to buy and where do you get them from? I am always so overwhelmed by the pattern books at spotlight, too many choices – I end up never getting anything!
Sadly, I agree. It is shapeless and hides your lovely figure! On the plus side, it is a lovely fabric!
Oh – how disappointing! Lovely fabric and all the effort it takes to make something, you really want RESULTS, don’t you?
I just hacked into some fabulous fabric to test one of those Simplicity dresses… but am completely unsure of which size I should be! I fall neatly between two sizes, and am unsure of the ease in the pattern. Rather ironically, I have problems understanding commercial patterns!!! Let’s hope I don’t create another donation for our local op-shop….
sigh…the time invested for naught…
I think your fabric (if you have enough) would do as a skirt with soft gathers like buttrick, or not….or cut smooth at the waistband. like vogue 8040, butterick 4993

Definitely not Butterick’s best effort! Especially when you compare it with some of the other lovely ones you’ve made.
I have found that when you check out a pattern, (at least one of the U.S. patterns, cause that’s where I’m from and what I use) that it’s best to look at the finished measurements on the pattern it’sself! Bust, waist etc…. it sure makes for making life a bit easier! I make wedding dresses for people and to tell the truth… if I were to go by what the outside of the actual pattern says…. there is No Way that they would fit! (most times that is!)
Your blogg is great! I was reading someone else’s and happened upon yours in there blog address’s.
Love the bags! Guess one of my daughters (who loves bags too, will be getting one for Birthday! Jean
