The big reveal – 2009 CAL blanket is finished!
Do you remember the Ravelry crochet-along afghan squares I posted each month last year? Guess what – they’re all joined together! The ends are all woven in! It is FINISHED!
24 squares, each using a ball or so of Cleckheaton Vintage Hues 100% wool.
Joined using Bendigo Woollen Mills 12ply Rustic, in the colour Midnight Tweed. The joining method is Priscilla Hewitt’s Flat Braid Join (there are even videos on YouTube that demonstrate how this is done) and the edging is Chris Simon‘s standard edging (found under the Afghan Joining Hints link on her blog). I used over 3 big balls of the Rustic – that’s over 600 grams just to join and edge! And each of the 24 squares was a 50g ball – go on, do the maths! That’s a big, heavy, warm blanket.
Although I’ve photographed it on the spare bed it’s actually living on the couch. Perfect for winter nights! Here’s another photo, just because I love it.
Thanks for the birthday wishes and the thoughtful comments on my last post! I’m really interested in your opinions on how we see things and how our views change. I’m still pondering. And contemplating colour.
Well done you Lara. That is one fantastic blanket.
I do remember seeing them very regularly. They look wonderful all together!!
That’s absolutely stunning. And I’m not even a fan of crochet! The colours are just wonderful. So were the balls of yarn variegated or did you change colours during each block?
So. Beautiful.
wow. this look amazing.
Fantastic, Lara. Well done! Loving those colours, and I bet it’ll keep people looking (as they snuggle beneath) at the amazingly varied designs in each square.
Big pat on back for you!!!
Lovely Crocheting…Great Colours & Design…bet your Glad to have it Finished…

I love the colors you chose. It’s absolutely gorgeous!!
Seriously gorgeous!!
Lara – this looks absolutely wonderful.
This is a perfect example of how our view change…I didn’t love the vintage hues last year. I loved your crochet & admired your skill but the yarn didn’t really float my boat…until now! It looks absolutely sensational. You’ve done a fabulous job & the midnight tweed is PERFECT.
As for the flat braid join?…almost time to drag out the brown grannies I think. xxx
Wow! That is amazing. I can’t crchet and can’t imagine how much work you must have put into that but it looks fantastic!
Holy smokes, it’s beautiful.
It’s stunning! And I love the joining yarn – it emphasises the squares so well without distracting from them at all.
I think it’s almost worth starting another granny blanket so I can give that joining technique a go, though if I start one before I finish the one that’s been hiding in a box for the last three years my husband might disown me… Maybe that might be motivation enough to get that darstedly UFO finished!!
Lara that is a magnificent quilt!!!! I love the colour choice and the way each square is slightly different. You must be sooooo pleased!!!
Lara,
It’s stunning, I love the yarn and the squares are gorgeous. I was nevious when you were doing the squares and more so now. I had a couple of skeins of that yarn and made a scarf and wished that I’d bought more.
