Thai Fisherman’s Pants
On our first visit to Thailand I bought rather a lot of fabric. One of the lengths that I bought was specifically woven for Thai Fisherman’s pants. My husband quite likes wearing loose trousers – he’s one of those bearded guys you see on holidays in hippy clothes 😉 – so this fabric purchase was especially for him.
I used Burda Style’s pattern for Thai Fisherman’s Pants. There are plenty of tutorials around for sewing this style, but I always prefer to use a pattern. I’m just not freestyle by nature! They describe this pattern as follows: These easy and comfortable lounge pants are incredibly versatile and the perfect beginner project. It only consists of a few pattern pieces and is quickly sewn together. Makes great sleeping pants as well! Download the pattern and follow the instructions to make the fishermen’s pants and you will be good to go in a couple of hours.
I’m not really a massive fan of Burda’s pdf patterns, but they are well priced. This was very easy to sew, and I did all the construction on the overlocker. The fabric is a fairly open weave and frayed very quickly. It needed that overlocking!
That back view above really shows how crookedly my husband stands! As you probably know, the great thing about this style of pants is the size adjustability. The front is folded over then tied to secure, with the rest of the waistband then folding over the ties.
This was almost a zero-waste pattern – there were only tiny scraps of fabric left over after cutting out, so the pre-cut length of fabric was spot on! If you like relaxed, loose and adjustable clothing, it’s worth giving the Thai Fisherman’s Pants style a try.
(The cotton voile shirt was also bought in Chiang Mai – I didn’t make it).
Lara, thank you so much for this post. My Spousal Equivalent occasionally complains that I never make anything for him. He’d love these pants!!
Putting them on my list.

This these look so cool and I like your husbands beard!
Kissing a man without a beard is like eating an egg without salt.
I love your description of your husband!
Love that fabric. It looks like a crepe which would make it super cool and comfortable in summer. Lucky husband.
I have had these on my ‘ to do’ list for an age. Your husband looks great in his. Can’t see any problem with dressing like a hippy 😉.
Hey, Lara…having trouble finding the Burda pattern at their website, and my local fabric shop can’t locate a number for it either. Yours look closest to the traditional Thai pants I love, and I don’t want to tear mine up to re-create the pattern if I don’t have to. Would you have that Burda pattern number, please?
Hi Elizabeth – this is an old Burda pattern, at the time it was called BS-003 and was free. I’ve done some googling, and they’re referred to as being in the BurdaStyle magazine June 2012 issue. Claire Kennedy Design details her experiences making thai fisherman’s pants at her blog too. I wonder if the pattern isn’t available any more.
The hyperlink to the pattern you used just takes you to the general site. Would you be able to send the real link? I can’t seem to find the pattern. Thanks.
Hi Imogen – I sewed these back in 2017. If the hyperlink isn’t going to the pattern any more, I figure that it’s no longer available on the Burda site. You might need to do some googling to find an equivalent. From earlier comments it looks as thought they were in the in the BurdaStyle magazine June 2012 issue – you might be able to locate a copy somewhere. Good luck!
Commenting for anyone else who manages to get here…
It looks like BS-003 went away in late October 2019, corresponding with Burdastyle.com getting a major overhaul. Other than this site, and the very small reference image on the afor mentioned Claire Kennedy Design, you’re not finding anything useful without some serious Web-fu.
Also, there are pants in the June2012 issue, but I don’t think they’re the exact same pattern, and they don’t appear to be on the website currently either. The pattern mentions inclusion in a “Summer Style 2014 Festival Dreams Collection.” links I found for this seemed to go off BurdaStyle.com, so maybe that will help you in your search.
Regardless, thanks for this post Lara, it’s going to prove invaluable if I have to recreate BS-003 from scratch!!
I have been searching for more than a few hours for this pattern. I have failed. If anyone is good at making a pattern from the sketches online, I’d be eternally grateful.
If you click around on Clair Kennedy’s page, you can actually download print-at-home pattern for these. I just did.
Can you direct me, please? I was unable to find what you said that you have found.
Hi I have made these pants and did not add a seam allowance. It feels it should have been more roomy. Should I have added the seam allowance when cutting the fabric or do the actual pattern included the seam allowance in the drawing? Many thanks 🙂
Hi Eli, it’s a very long time since I sewed these pants! But they were a Burda pattern, and older Burda did not include seam allowances in the pattern; they had to be added when cutting out.
