Jalie 2787: Criss-Cross Top
In an effort to conquer my stretch sewing trepidation, I purchased some Jalie patterns. They always seem to get great reviews.
After cutting out and mucking up two tops – neither from Jalie patterns – and tossing both into the bin I began sewing up the sleeveless Criss-Cross Top from a remnant I’d bought earlier in the year.
It was beautifully drafted and all the pieces went together perfectly. The fabric I used has a fair lycra content and is medium weight, so it was quite easy to handle. Construction was done using the overlocker, and edges were all finished with twin needle stitching on the sewing machine.
I shortened the pattern a few inches at the hemline, but now that I see a photo of the back with those fold lines I think I need to somehow modify the back piece to allow for the way my ribs are right on top of my hip bones (I am extremely short-waisted).
But overall? I love this pattern! I’m looking forward to making the flutter sleeve version, maybe in one size smaller (all those workouts at the gym are having an effect). Please excuse the lack of glamour in these photos – unrinsed and unstyled hair fresh from swimming lessons with the girls this morning, no makeup (what’s new) and no airbrushing! After this taste of success I pulled out another remnant and made a top without a pattern (gasp!) – but you’ll have to wait until next time to see how that turned out!
Edges were all finished with twin needle stitching on the machine, with construction done using the overlocker.
I’m a bit confused – you sewed the pieces together using the overlocker then went over the overlocking with a twin needle? Or the other way around?
I love the print, your top looks great!
My machine has a twin needle, I wouldn’t know where to start! The top looks great (as do you). Stretch sewing may be on my list of things to do, in 2011. No point rushing these things!
Love your top. I have so much trouble finding patterns that suit me. I haven’t seen that range before. Probably need to conquer my own stretch sewing fear sometime soon too.
It looks fab, Lara. I love the cross-over and the neckline – it really suits you. Nice fabric you have used too.
I have been wondering about Jalie patterns. I think it might have been Can Do Books who were selling them at the craft show last year … and I was awfully tempted (but restrained!).
It looks great! I’ve made exactly 1 top for myself with knit fabric and I’d like to try more. Thanks for the inspiration!
Looks great, Lara! Much better cut than the New Look version that I made.
I’m pretty sure that Leah has this pattern, and always looks fab in every version of it.
Oh – and I’m SO GLAD that you’re gaining confidence with knits!!
Great pattern, and a great look for you too! I’m still uber-scared of knits, but I need to get over it, as I have a lovely fuschia pink top to refashion!
Wow – thanks for the tip – this pattern looks great on you!! Did you buy it via their site or does someone in Oz have them? I’d love to see more.
Great top – these patterns do get good reviews!
I love the crossover (& the brown). xx
well done on conquering the stretch…i often stop myself from buying cute stretch fabric cause i’m just to scared of working with them. Your top worked out perfect.
You look terrific! Great top and love the fabric. Thanks for sharing.

looks great as you do by the way! i think you’re like me not getting in the blog much, always behind the camera! I can definitely see that top getting a lot of wear and I do see those patterns getting good reviews on patternreview!
well done! love your no pattern top too, gosh I haven’t sewn a thing for myself lately and must get a few patterns out!
oh and I always go for the unglamorous look here!
