Vintage crochet Friday #36
You’ve all seen the crocheted dress that Cate Blanchett wore recently, haven’t you? My initial reaction was “wow, crochet on the red carpet – that’s cool”. And I still think crochet on the red carpet is extremely cool – but maybe not that particular dress. As you know, I love crochet, I love the granny square, I love vintage crochet, and I also love Cate. Part of me loves this dress – part of me loathes it. Is it doing crocheted clothing a disservice or celebrating it? Your thoughts?
And that leads me to today’s Vintage crochet Friday photo.
Made from square motifs, and appropriately worn as a beach cover-up. Don’t you think that they look like me and Clare? What do you reckon – should we? And maybe a mini version for Stella?

I didn’t like the dress she wore either. It just didn’t look right. I think the right stitch and it would be a wow look at her type of dress, but not something that looks like a blanket cut up.
When I saw Cate wearing the Crochet Dress on the red carpet, I immediately though of you! I think Cate is wearing the dress in good faith, not mocking craft but celebrating the resurgence of handmade. That’s how I like to look at it anyway. She looks great in it, can’t think of too many other people who could pull that off though!

Hmmm. I am kind of inclined to agree with you. I think Cate could have worn something absolutely stunning in crochet. The ‘blanket dress’ is a bit meh, and looks like she’s taking the piss, even though I am *sure* that’s not what she’s doing. Hasn’t it got the blog world aflutter though?!
I love the fact that she’s wearing a crocheted handmade dress. I think most of the negative comments were regarding the cut of the dress. I think that if the granny squares were on an angle rather than straight, then it might have given the dress a better shape.
Once I dragged my eyes away from the cover-up, I was almost convinced the girl on the right was Clare…even before I read what you wrote!
Clearly you have both been crochet-lovers in a previous life!
I LOVE Cate’s dress! I just saw it on GoFugYourself. I was blown away. Not sure anybody else could’ve pulled this off. I just thought it was awesome, and she’s really got confidence to wear it. Loved the little details: ruffles at hem, one sleeve, etc.
Not so crazy, though, about this vintage pattern. I remember the 60s, and those things aren’t pretty to me. Now, 40s stuff…THAT’s vintage and lovely. Am I just getting old?

Yep – the cut of Cate’s dress was a little bit ordinary but it was a nice guesture. I reckon she could have pulled off wearing one of those long crochet numbers you’ve blogged in the past – – and looked stunning.
I fear the Von Trapps are coming out again lara. You, Clare and Stella in matching outfits……
Hey, I was delighted when I saw the photos of Cate in that dress, and baffled by the vehemence of some people’s negative, loud comments around me. Good for her! Only someone that gorgeous could pull it off, but I’m sure it’s a vindication of craftiness as cool. Mere mortals would wear something slightly less full-on, but then – what wouldn’t have been a statement, would it?

liked that it was crochet but I don’t think the the weight or colours did her any favours. It certainly looked like a statement more than a fashion choice. Imagine that dress in a 3 or 4 ply and black, ecru and white…..then I’d really like it 🙂
