Felting and fulling
Completely inspired by Annie, I have finally had a go at crocheting some felted/fulled bags. Before:
and after:
See what a couple of rounds in the washing machine and dryer can do to non-washable wool? Here’s my second attempt – before:
and after:
What fun! Essentially these bags are beanies with handles. I used wool from stash that claimed to be washable at cold temperatures, but would have probably had even more effective results with a more appropriate yarn choice (ie one that claimed to be only washable by hand). There is a considerable decrease in size once washed/tumble dried a couple of times. And as for felting versus fulling? According to Wikipedia’s entry on felt, these bags are fulled, not felted, as fulling is done to fabric whereas felting is done to fibres that are not yet in fabric form. Either way, I really like the finished effect!
OH, I really love that second bag especially, the colours look glorious.
I really like them too – they look sensational!
They are fabulous!! I’m knitting a hat at the mo which I will full. I thought I was felting it so thanks for the update. 🙂
You’ve done a wonderful job. Isn’t it fun seeing them shrink and change?
They look great Lara! Annie sure is one to inspire isn’t she.
They look great Lara. It’s amazing the difference in look and feel after the wool gets wet.
It’s addictive! I’m on my 4th bag at the moment – 3 were crochet and one knitted with circular needles. I also plan to make a couple of beanies and some might be felted (sorry, fulled!). Great fun to take it out the washing machine and see what happened. I crochet small smaples of my yarn, measure the size, put them through the washing machine to see if it felts. If it does felt, I measure it again to see how much it shrinks and that helps with sizing of the next bags. Your bags are really cute! I am busy with a choc brown bag with yellow and green stripes at the moment. Cannot wait to see it come out the washing machine this weekend!
Yeah Lara!! Loved seeing your results. Loved the techno talk too. It is quite addictive. I’m getting back to some Betz White cup cakes tomorrow!
Very cute …. where do you get the time?
Fully loving it!
They look fantastic Lara. Absolutely love it.
Love the gorgeous coloured hooks in your other post too.
