Felting and fulling

Completely inspired by Annie, I have finally had a go at crocheting some felted/fulled bags.  Before:

Crochet bag before fulling by you.

and after:

Fulled crochet bag by you.

See what a couple of rounds in the washing machine and dryer can do to non-washable wool?  Here’s my second attempt – before:

Crochet bag - before fulling by you.

and after:

Crochet bag - after fulling by you.

What fun!  Essentially these bags are beanies with handles.  I used wool from stash that claimed to be washable at cold temperatures, but would have probably had even more effective results with a more appropriate yarn choice (ie one that claimed to be only washable by hand).  There is a considerable decrease in size once washed/tumble dried a couple of times.  And as for felting versus fulling?  According to Wikipedia’s entry on felt, these bags are fulled, not felted, as fulling is done to fabric whereas felting is done to fibres that are not yet in fabric form.  Either way, I really like the finished effect!
