Speed sewing
Clare had a 7th birthday party to attend yesterday, at 2.00pm. At 11.00am I said to her “would you like me to make you a new pinafore to wear to the party?” Of course she said yes, and dashed upstairs to help me to collect the supplies.
Firstly, to select a pattern. A few were rejected by Miss Clare “because they’re not really my style”. So it was back to an old faithful, New Look 6477. Last time I’d made this it was in a size 4, so I had to tape the pattern tissue back together (luckily I keep it for that reason) to recut it in a size 6. If only I’d taken Nikki’s advice on transferring multi-size patterns to card! Clare busied herself getting out the matching thread, zip, ric-rac, choosing the contrast fabric, and finding the perfect accent button.
Ta-da! Shiny cotton/spandex/metallic denim from the remnant table at GJ’s Discount Fabrics. Not exactly my style, but I knew that Clare would love it! I cut the pleat pieces out of the front skirt pattern and recut them in contrast fabric, remembering (for once) to add seam allowances. Clare was quite adamant that there be a flower applique on the bodice front. Just the sort of extra details that take that little bit of time – time I didn’t really have! I talked her out of adding a trim to the bottom of the skirt and just focused on the ric-rac around the neckline.
There is an invisible zip in the back, and I managed to get it lined up perfectly the second try. By then I was sweating as the clock hands seemed to be moving faster and faster! But the last stitch was sewn with about one minute to spare.
The party was wonderful – and there was even face-painting! Little girl’s heaven. Clare was very happy with her pinny and had a ball. It was all worth it!
Gina of Clutterpunk has a great post on curing craftstipation. I definitely managed to cure some of mine yesterday!
Oh, a reminder to the people that expressed interest in attending a Melbourne Northern Suburbs (and friends) Blogmeet – we have a dinner planned for Wednesday 15th July at 7.30pm – a great opportunity to meet and chat without the kidlets! Please leave a comment on this post if you want further details and I’ll contact you (if you haven’t received my email already). Thanks for being so patient.
very well done, Lara. I have made that dress before too. It is a good one and Clare looked absolutely gorgeous. What a lucky girl to have such a good mum!
See! This is why I need you up here! Well done. Clare looks so happy and so very beautiful in her dress.
I really, REALLY like the contrasting pleat. So cute.
And what a nice surprise to get to the bottom of the post and find your link to me… shucks. I actually got stuff done tonight myself, and I even thoroughly enjoyed the process. It was great to think through all that advice!
Wow, sewing under pressure! What a lovely dress – Clare looks really lovely in it.
That is just sooooo cute! I love the pics with Clares missing little teeth
Wow wow wow Lara. Impressive effort. Sometimes working to a deadline does not allow for procrstination! The dress is beautiful and how empowering for Clare to choose how she would look, even if it’s not Mummy’s style!
Wow! I’m in awe of your speed sewing under pressure!
That dress is totally cute.
Woohoo SPEEDster!!
Yep – the old multi-size thing on card takes a bit of doing in the beginning but it saves a bucketload of time when you’re making clothes for a growing child. I’m already glad I’ve done it with a few patterns.
Clare is growing up so fast…
I love those photos, Clare looks like she has little pink wings sprouting from her head……..
she looks gorgeous – and the pinny is great! You did a wonderful job 🙂
That is such a cute dress! I think I have the pattern too but haven’t made it up before.
I always trace my patterns so that they remain in that one huge tissue paper piece. Spotlight sell something called Easy trace, or many people I know just use Non-sew in interfacing that comes in a 10 metre roll for about $7-8 at Spotlight. And you won’t need to pin the cut interfacing to the fabric and the non sew interfacing ‘sticks’ to the fabric.
Clare really is the image of you Lara!
I would love to come on the 15th … but I will be in Fiji.
Are you going to the show the next week?
WOW, what a great take on a simple pattern…I would never have thought to add all those little extras, you certainly made the dress unique and georgous to boot!
Most of us couldn’t get to the shops and back with a new dress – in the time it took you to just whip one up! Absolutely divine!!
Clare is gorgeous Lara, great job on her beautiful dress.
Lovely meeting you & your lovely girl properly yesterday.
Hope you had a good day.
Wow…you’re a super mum! Fab dress…and the fabric and colour choices and extra touches are so funky!
