Style Arc Adelaide jacket
Hmmm, did I get this pattern as a Style Arc freebie one month? I really can’t remember. Whether it was free or not, it was definitely worth adding to my collection – especially considering that I have already used it!
From the Style Arc website: Cut for a boxy fit our Adelaide Woven Jacket will become a mainstay of your wardrobe. Make it as a tailored jacket using the lining pattern to create a sophisticated look for work or that special occasion. Make it unlined with in-seam pockets for a perfect desk to dinner look. Alternatively why not sew an inside bind to the cut edges and add a patch pocket for a great weekend jacket? You can get all these looks and more from just one pattern. FABRIC SUGGESTION Wool, felt, melton, linen.
I had some rigid denim on hand so decided to sew what would hopefully be a wearable muslin. And very wearable it is!
Yes, it’s boxy, as described. And as most of my regular readers know, I am a fan of boxy. I sewed size 12, and had the loose fit that I expected from the line drawings.
I chose to do the topstitching in blue because I’d just sewn up a striped Concord tee that had fine stripes of blue in it – so why not! I also found a couple of vintage buttons in stash that were pretty much the same shade of blue. Serendipity! I used a triple stitch for the topstitching, and used it to secure all the facings in place. I didn’t line my jacket.
I have a feeling that this jacket will be worn for years and years. I’ll definitely use this pattern again too – I have some boiled wool that I think would work perfectly. I’d also like to give a linen version a try. There is lots of opportunity to really make this pattern your own.
Certainly a statement piece. It will be interesting to see it made in a softer fabric- maybe go down a size?
Love this. Would be excellent in boiled wool too.
What a timely post for me, I emailed Stylearc over the weekend asking if they thought Adelaide would work in denim. Their reply was yes if it is not too rigid. I just bought the pattern yesterday with the plan to start with denim, then wool then linen! I was so excited to see your post and how well it turned out!
Isn’t it gret when the timing is right! Yes, my denim is not too stiff and has worked well. Happy sewing!
I like this make very much, and yes versatile…..I have almost the same jacket by different company and it’s one of my most favorite jackets for a quick walkabout with the pup or to the store……love your blue touches….think boiled wool would be perfect….that’s what mind is made of.
Good Show!….Laura
wow that is really nice, I hadn’t noticed that pattern, great details and I would wear that all the time!
I suspect that you would make many variations of this style!
I love that pattern, nearly bought it a couple of times. Not wanting to cause offence but did you do a forward shoulder adjustment? The only thing that has stopped me buying it is that the neckline is quite high and I have forward shoulders so I worry it may pull the neckline up. I love your denim with contrasting top stitching, I bet you’ll be wearing it for years
No offense taken, that’s a really good question! I didn’t do a forward shoulder adjustment, and it is comfortable to wear as it is, but I probably should have. I need to put up a poster in my sewing room right next to my cutting table with a list of standard alterations to consider for each garment! I often do narrow shoulders and various adjustments for my height, as well as grading out waists, but really do need to add forward shoulder and short back waist length to that list. I always remember those two after the fact!
