Style Arc Adeline dress
I liked this dress so much that I made two!
Style Arc describe this dress as follows: ADELINE DRESS: Great designer style dress which is easy to sew and wear. The slight cocoon shape and its roll up sleeve makes give this style a casual but trendy look. FABRIC SUGGESTION: Linen, Silk, Crepe.

First off I sewed size 12 without alterations in a floral cotton that I’d picked up from the Darn Cheap Fabrics $2 table at some stage. It was straightforward to sew. I love the deep facings around the hemline and the neckline.
On the floral dress I chose to do the topstitching in bright green as a contrast. (Actually, I chose to do it because that was the thread colour already in the machine and I figured it would work).
I’m pleased with the way that this dress fits me at the back neck. There is a centre back seam, so it would be easy to tweak this to fit individual body shapes if you needed more or less curve.
The back facing curves downwards, which is nice stylistic touch. The sleeve hems are quite deep, which makes them turn back and sit well.
Lengthwise, this is a little longer than I prefer my hemlines. The hem has a definite curve up at the centre front and down at the centre back, which is why a hemline facing is an obvious choice. I am only 158cm tall, so that needs to be taken into account if you are sewing this dress.
There is a handy shorten/lengthen line printed on the pattern if you want to alter the length. I shortened it two inches the second time that I made it, and think it is a better length on me. This time around I sewed it in Merchant & Mills linen in a lovely smoky warm grey.
Now, grey is a bit too neutral for me, so I chose to use some teal topstitching along the pocket tops and to secure both the neckline and hem facings. I also used the selvedge to add a bit of interest along the top of the pockets. I now wish that I’d used selvedge down the centre back seam as well. Oh hindsight….
All the topstitching was done with a triple stitch. In addition to the teal topstitching, I used grey to topstitch along the centre back seam and shoulder seams. Just for that tiny bit more detail that no-one else will notice, but I will know is there!
This is a terrific style for those of us who prefer to avoid waist definition. I love both versions and know they will get loads of wear this summer!
How timely!! I have this cut out in a lolly pink linen for a trial run, altho I suspect will come together well. I love both your versions, shows the great potential of this pattern.
Love this on you, very smart
Your dresses look nice. But I have to say that I love your shoes!
Your dresses look great, Lara. I’m glad you’ve shared this as I’m about to buy the Adeline pattern to use up some linen/cotton in a tropical print I just bought from Spotlight – it’s always nice to know a pattern will turn out well!
Lovely, as usual! Great fabric choices! I just got this pattern during the Black Friday sale… can’t wait for it to arrive!
I have also made two and am considering a third!
They are both lovely dresses and look quite different in the floral and plain fabrics. The shoes are the perfect compliment! I love the whole outfit!
Love the selvedge touch on the pockets!
I love your blog but I (sometimes) love your shoes more lol. Have you had a look at the Stylearc Winsome Designer dress? not too many photos around but I’d love you to review it.
Great dresses! I especially love the bright printed version. Those are colors I would wear, and they look terrific on you. I like what you said about the style being a good choice for someone who doesn’t want waistline definition. I’m in my 60s and have been losing my waistline in the last decade or more. This style dress is right up my alley. Happy sewing!
Great dresses and I too love those facings….something I never thought I’d be saying;-)
Very very lovely!
Great frocks!!
This is a great pattern Lara. Nice to see the floral and the plain version together. Two completely different looks. The shorter length does suit you better. Love the nice little details you have added with selvedge and the contrasting top stitching. I have a cotton/linen blend floral fabric earmarked for another Adeline and I am excited to make it after seeing your lovely floral version.
Nice – agree that the shorter length is a winner, and love the selvage detiail!
Great style on you – I agree that the shorter length looks better, though both look fabulous 😃
Great dresses Lara and many thanks for the review! I’ll be making this up very soon, great to have a heads up with the length. Your facings look beautifully finished, I doubt I can match you for that, topstitching is my nemesis.
Great dresses that suit you so well! I really like the grey one and your very cute shoes!
Thanks for this blog, Lara. It is great to see the patterns on someone I can identify with. I love lots of the color choices you use. I also appreciate the reviews and comments.
Hey there, I’m following you and other sewing bloggers in Instagram etc. and I’m looking at making the Adeline. My only concern with this pattern is the centre back seam… my general experience with centre back seams and darts is that they tend to get pulled apart the more I wear the garment, especially in the seat area, where the seam is compromised every time I sit down or stretch the garment around me (despite loose fit). Do you think this dress back could be cut on the fold, with an allowance for the omitted seam?
Any advice appreciated! 🙂
(I’m kazzibeesticks on Instagram)
I have just cut this out and looking at the instructions it says that providing your fabric is wide enough you can eliminate the back centre seam.
Sorry, I missed your comment! Yes, you could definitely cut this one on the fold. It’s just a straight seam. If you don’t need any shaping there, go for it!
Those shoes, tho!! Where’d you get ’em???
I have a favourite ebay seller who sells Django and Juliette sample shoes (size 37). Because they’re samples, they are generally a one off. I get lots of shoes from there!
