Comparing Apple(ton)s with Apple(ton)s
My blog posts about my Appleton dresses have garnered a bit of interest. I thought that it would be worthwhile to compare the two dresses side by side, with most other factors taken out of the equation. Photos taken on the same day. Same underwear. Same shoes. Different necklaces but of similar shapes. Same location, same lighting, same poses, dresses tied the same way. So here you go – these were only taken a few minutes apart.
Remember that these are the same size – 12 C/D, and the fabric is type is extremely similar. The fabric in the pink spotted dress is slightly softer; I think that it has more viscose than the blue/green which I now suspect has some poly in it. Otherwise the only difference is the colour and the print.
For reference, my original blog post on the pink spotted dress is here and the original blog post on the blue/green reptilian print is here.
I think it’s interesting!
it’s fascinating how much fabric can change the look of a pattern! both the fabric content and the print/design!
I love both! I definitely tend towards the “Medium size” prints like the one on the right – I feel like it’s a great scale for the dress and my body, without causing too many print matching pesky needs 🙂
Great comparison. Fabric choice makes a huge difference in fit and looks. I remember being amazed a few years ago at the difference in identical yarns, simply due to different dyes. Tiny differences that make a large difference in the finished product.
Do you have a favourite out of these two dresses?
Wow! The crimson one looks miles better! The colour really brings you up, whereas the reptilian green seems to bring the feel of the dress down. If that makes sense? Great comparison! And I’m now going to try making this dress too! Thanks for the inspiration! xx
Talk about interesting – I think I’m in shock at the difference. This is fascinating! But now I remember reading that for “apple” shapes (ie tummys) that a “busy” print distracts or hides the shape. The light seems to bounce off the greenish reptile print too, which seems to highlight the boobs & tummy. It’s hard to pick this when buying fabric but I’ll certainly try to look for it. Thanks so much for the side by side comparison!
Very interesting comparison. Fascinating to see the effect that different prints can have on the overall look of a pattern.
I love both too. Both different but I think they just highlight different strengths. The dark is more dramatic and maybe my favourite but then I think the softer shades are also very flattering on you. For my part……one pattern and two entirely different looks……..a bonus!
Nice comparison, my favorite is the pink one.
Hmmm, you were right about the print on the green dress. Even with it tied at the back it does emphasise the tummy more than the pink one. But that is in still photos. Moving about shouldn’t be as bad? Having said that I do personally prefer the green/blue one. But something for keeping in mind when placing prints. Lighter will draw the attention!
YOU KNOW IT IS SO IMPORTANT TO REALLY USE A PATTERN MORE THAN ONCE,ESPECIALLY SINCE THESE 2 ARE BOTH SUCCESSFUL….BUT THE FABRIC CHANGES THE LOOK….i CAN SEE A BLAZER ON THE LEFT ONE AND OFF TO SEE THE BANKERS! THE PINK ONE, LUNCH IN THE CITY. FABULOUS!
