not everything works
Sometimes you can make something with a tried and true pattern and it still doesn’t work. For example, a recent Renfrew.
At first glance you notice those fantastic stripes and the texture. Then you realise that it is big. Way too big for a semi-fitted top. And what you don’t know is that it is also itchy and feels awful next to the skin.
This sweater knit was on the Darn Cheap Fabrics $2 per metre table, and I bought it just to play with. Due to the sweater knit texture, it was very hard to cut out accurately, despite using a pattern that I have used many times before. Hence it being too big. But the main problem is that I can’t wear it as a next-to-skin layer. The fabric would work in a coat or another overlayer, but not in a Renfrew for me. Off to the oppy with this one….
I made a top for my daughter last year with a sweater knit, that had exactly the same problem. I think it went straight from the sewing machine to the donation bag too.
The fabric would make a nice shortish pencil type skirt. You could underline it then to hold its shape. The colours really look good on you.
I like it on you – why don’t you cut off the sleeves, bind the armholes, and wear it over a long-sleeved top? Nice for days when you want your arms free, but it’s just a little too chilly.
It’s a pity about the fabric because you’re right – the first thing you notice are those fantastic stripes and the texture. Better luck next time!
Good on you for handing it on. Gee you did a good job of matching those stripes.
I saw this fabric at Darn Cheap Fabrics too and thought it would be perfect for Vogue 8780 (long drapy cardigan)
Thanks Kim – I have more of this fabric in a different colourway, and wasn’t aware of that pattern. It could be just the ticket!
I find I get the best fit in Sewaholic, particularly for the tops and dresses, when I go down a size from my recommended measurements. My favorite Renfrew that is also my recommended size is out of a sweatshirt weight French terry that has hardly any stretch. I made the cowl version and while the cowl is bulky it is very warm for the winter! The scoop neck version I made out of a cotton/Lycra interlock ended up looking just like your striped top. I didn’t feel comfortable wearing it so I donated it.
Yes, I think that it’s all about what we feel comfortable in! Luckily I’ve just made another Renfrew in another fabric that did work.
Shame I liked the colours but you’re right it makes you look a size bigger. It’ll look great on someone else.
