Simplicity 3874
This is one of the dresses I constructed at Sewjourn. It’s view B of Simplicity 3874, which is a pattern I would have overlooked if I hadn’t seen Shannon’s gorgeous versions. I made a size 12 in the upper bodice but cut size 14 for the width.
There is a lapped zipper in the back, but I hardly need it – I definitely wouldn’t need it if I’d made this dress in a knit. The fabric is vintage cotton twill that I received as a gift a while ago – thank you so much Emma, I love it! The only thing I’m not sure about is the length. The pattern length was very long – it looked a bit daggy and a little reminiscent of a nighty. So I cut off about six inches (!!) and turned up a two inch hem that I machine blindstitched into place. Now I think that it might be a bit too short. Quick, cover your eyes to shield them from the glare of my moon tan.
I might wear it a couple of times then decide if I’ll let the hem down a little.
ooh, I have that pattern! Got it in the bargain box at Spotty. I have overlooked it too, so now have a dress to make, and a new blog to follow, cool! And haha on the moon tan, I think it stays around longer the older we get!
I never heard of a MOON tan…I like that. Up here in Alaska, I must have the best MOON tan there is. I also like Bec’s comment. “I think it stays around longer the older we get” that’s funny. I need a trip where the Sun is warm and I can shed some of my warm clothes. Your dress looks great on you. You are one busy woman. Thanks for sharing.
I had to chuckle when you mentioned a ‘moon tan’. I’ve actually never heard of that!
I like the length as it is, but I suppose it all depends on where you’re going to wear it.
PS – I’ll pop that fabric in the mail today – sorry for being so tardy.
LOVE the fabric Lara and I think if you are worried about your ‘moon tan’ (I have one as well!) you could wear some short leggings underneath, like the ones that go just under your knee? I have such ugly knees from so many childhood scars, that I nearly always wear dresses/skirts just under my knees, so this could be a good solution for me too.
The dress looks good. I have to admit I’m partial to cotton over knits and this one looks good. I think the length is okay but think you’re right and a bit of a tan would set off the fabric better.
This dress is so nice and I love the colors in the background and print of the fabric. I think pumps in any color on the dress but white would really look good.
I think my Grandma made a dress out of the fabric too.
Had a flashback when I saw it.
Love it – definitly short, show off those pins!
