Vogue 1179
If you are in need of a quick fix dress pattern that contains only three pattern pieces, then you can’t go past Vogue 1179, a DKNY (Donna Karan New York) pattern.
I squeezed the pattern pieces from a textured striped knit I bought at Clegs earlier in the year. I didn’t have enough fabric to match the stripes properly at the sides, but I hope that most people won’t notice (well, you will, because I just pointed it out).
I shortened the pattern pieces in two places to allow for my lack of height. It kept the proportions right so was worth doing. I also simplified the construction as per suggestions on Pattern Review – I just turned and twin needle stitched the armhole edges, and to attach the cowl I folded it in half wrong sides together, then overlocked it to the neckline. Even though this dress is super simple it’s beautifully drafted and the front pleats and cowl give it a bit of oomph. And it’s incredibly comfortable of course!
My favourite garments are always the ones that are loose around the waist and stomach. This will be a great layering piece – I’ve got some petrol blue wool jersey that is begging to be used with the same pattern.
My computer came back this week and we are finally starting to catch up on getting it all back up to date and making sure that it’s networked and everything operating as it should. My apologies to anyone who is still waiting for a response to an email – I will get to you, I promise! Things have been rather hectic here.
You look great in this! This is another one of those patterns that I’m meh about until I see it on someone else. You definitely should make it again in the blue!
It’s a lovely dress – you look great in it.
Thats great, The less pattern pieces the better, I hate sewing facings. It looks pretty good too, thats something I would wear at the moment, my tummy still hasn’t recovered from baby number 3, not sure it going to spring back this time 🙁
Lara it looks lovely on you – I really like the pleats at the front. Nice fabric too. It looks vaguely familiar … maybe I fondled it at Clegs!
This looks like one I will have to get. I love it. Especially beside it hides the tummy. Thanks lara!
Looks great on you Lara
I LOVE that textured fabric – great little outfit!
Lara, my Mum has just made this up in the past week, in a pale lilac silk jersey. It is de-lish – to hers she added sleeves (3/4).
She has recently been making up a similar pattern with a cowl neck, and sleeves, as a top. Luckily for me, she made me one, in, would you believe, pale petrol blue wool jersey! I will have to find out what pattern it is and let you know, as she has made 3 already and it is lovely.
Lara, I am Claire’s mum. I agree with you about the modified sewing for Vogue 1179. it works very well as a top.The second pattern that Claire refered to is Vogue 8634. It is a top in 2 different lenngthe with 3 sleeve lengths. It has a horizontal seam under the bust that I found to be unflattering and very east to eliminate. If the fabric you use is not a true 150cms it needs slightly more or you can cut the collar in 2 with seams at the side instead of 1 seam at the back. It is a lovely and very quick pattern
Looks great. I love a comfy cowl number…. (as you may have noticed?). Your co-model looks like she has all the right moves, too!!
You know, I still haven’t made up that 3-seam Japanese top that Catherine was making the day you basted the quilt at the studio. Guess which pattern is coming to Sewjourn with me?
Love the mini-me model! Too cute! Great dress, too.
Nice one Lara, I was eyeing off those lemons in the background.
As always, I love your little co-model! That dress is tres chic, and looks so comfy and versatile. Good job! (Again!)
This really suits you, style, fabric, everything!
