My creative space…
My creative space has been all about the hook again. When little sick Stella asked for a pink poncho last week, I could hardly refuse. We went up to my 8ply stash and chose seven shades of pink, predominantly in wool, with one acrylic and one cotton/wool/lycra blend. I found a 5mm hook and started to crochet. A couple of days later we had this.
It’s your basic granny-square type of poncho. I started with 60 foundation single crochet (US terms), joined them into a ring, did a round of US dc, then began on the 3dc groups into every third chain, increasing at the centre front and the centre back. Changed colour every round, with two of the pale pinks followed by three of the deeper pinks, until it looked big enough. I finished off with a row of US sc in the same pale pink as the last round of 3dc groups, then did a row of hdc in each of three deeper pinks to finish off. Add a twisted cord threaded through the neckline dc’s and a couple of pom-poms and ta-da!
She won’t even try it on.

Gotta love ’em, huh?
This is so pretty and you worked it up so quickly. Your little one is definitely a training woman “who can change her mind if she so chooses” ☺
Little minx! & that is why I don’t make stuff for my kids. Love the pinkery.
Amazing! The colour- combo is fantastic! If I were her I would wear it all the time, hehe.
I am sure I had one of those when I was a little girl, not such fantastic colours though.
LOVE IT…I was seriously just looking this type of pattern up on Ravelry…I hope she tries it on and realizes she loves it….
Just beautiful! She’s lucky to have a crafty Mum .. and I’m sure she’ll wear it eventually.
Don’t you just love kids… You’ve inspired me to try crochet. I’ve enrolled in a beginners crochet course of 6 hours spread over three sundays in September. wish me luck.
It is lovely!! Maybe she’ll change her mind and try it on soon
Kids! Who’d have em?! 😉 It looks beautiful, I’m sure she’ll come around!
Very pretty!
If you want, I have a 7 year old who was admiring the poncho over my shoulder… She also wears the acrylic/nylon mauve poncho that my grandmother crocheted for me when I was 5.
ha, there is a mum over here (me) that would wear it! And your pom poms are so perfect…*sigh* to be so clever!
So sorry she won’t try it on Lara – it’s heart breaking when that happens isn’t it!!
I bet soon though it will be the thing she wants to wear to swimming lessons, to kinder to bed. That will probablyhappen at the peak of summer!
Ach! She won’t even try it on? That’s kind of funny… but not.
At least it’s there for when she decides she wants one again.
So gorgeous – I love those colours.
Oh I’m sorry…is it rude to laugh?
It makes you such a great Mum though. She asked and you delivered. Nicely done.
xx
She won’t try it on!!! That’s priceless. Crochet is like a foreign language to me but I’m feeling the pull.
I love it!!!
Oh dear, I was so enjoying reading that post and then the last line took me by surprise. At first “Oh no!” and then “Ha, Ha, Ha”. Honestly, could these little munchkins be any more frustrating and gorgeous all at once!?! When she’s ready she’ll be wearing it with pride 🙂 I have such fond memories of the blue with red trim poncho I wore as a child for the longest time. Didn’t matter what my Mum dresses me in I ALWAYS put that poncho on over the top!
You are a wonderful Mum to listen and honour your childrens wishes, requests and desires….and then respect their changes of minds!!! I read your blog daily and learn much from you not only about crafting but about mothering. Thank you
that’s something they never grow out of … asking for stuff and then not wearing it. i made a purple cotton scarf for Miss C (22) and i found it on her floor. mummy’s got a new scarf … but i’m guess you won’t get much use out of the poncho. i wish it fitted me because it’s beautiful.

I had a poncho just like this in 5th grade….so many memories. Thanks 🙂
Gorgeous! I love it and may have to borrow the idea when my fairy god daughter comes of an age to wear that sort of thing!
Oh and she wont even try it on!
At least you have created something totally beautiful to enjoy 🙂
I was wondering how to make a poncho so thank you. Telling her it’s totally cool and retro-tastic probably won’t work on one so young, but good luck anyway!
Samething happened to me, my grand daughter was having her first baby a girl! So I get all my patterns out that I had been making for years, the first one I come to is a newborn poncho ofcouse I had to make it, plus sweaters and blankets even a baby bunting! She lives in Wisconsin so when baby Allana-faye was born in Dec. My daughter flew out a few days before. When she opened the gifts that had taken all through fall to make she looked at me and said oh Nan I should of told you nobody puts hand made on. babies anymore ! I was crushed, she hugged me and said but Alanna- Faye will. So give it time! You never know
I did dress my daughters in hand knits – and they still like to wear them! The eldest (now 17) recently ‘commissioned’ a cotton jumper from her Grandma and she loves it. Grandma is knitting a jumper for the younger one (now 13) next!
