Not So Drapey Vest
There’s been a lot of SACWIC (sit-and-crochet-while-I-chat) taking place over the past couple of weeks. I haven’t had much sewing machine time, but the hook has been moving up and down nicely. This is the Drapey Vest (Ravelry link) by Dora Ohrenstein, published in the March/April 2010 edition of Crochet Today!
The pattern is written for worsted weight (approx 10 ply) wool/bamboo. I used Patons Jet, which is 12 ply wool/alpaca – it was what I had in stash. I did work a gauge swatch and upsized the hook to 10mm, and worked the size medium. But as you can see, this isn’t very drapey. The width is fine, but the length is way off. The fibre mix just didn’t substitute to give a similar sillhouette to the original pattern. However, I like this vest! It can also be worn crossed over and pinned:
I’ve also tried it recently with the neckline pinned up high under the chin. All variations look good!
I’m still tossing up whether I should purchase some of the recommended yarn to make this again like the longer, drapier original pattern, but there is a lot of yarn in my stash and a lot of pattern in my queue – it’s probably just time to move on! I’ve got enough of the yarn left to make a hat, so might crochet one up this evening.
Looks great on you! I like the shading of the vertical stripes and how they become diagonals when folded over in front.
Congratulations!
The colour really suits you Lara!

I’m looking for this pattern! Help! Do you know where I can get one? Thanks!
