A time capsule
Last time I went to the Northern Craft Bonanza I was the lucky recipient of a rather large bag of craft materials that Gina was destashing. She’d been given some bags of yarn and crochet-related items that had belonged to an old lady, and passed them on to me saying that there was “some crochet thread in there”. It was a couple of days before I had the time and space to really unpack the bag properly and see what was in there. And oh my goodness!
Crochet thread in all sorts of sizes. Some as thin as dressmaking thread. Others around 4 ply yarn size. And not just the thread – lots of crochet motifs, some still incomplete.
There was a rug made from granny squares, another bag of granny squares that hadn’t yet been joined and still had lots of yarn left to make more, an unassembled knitted baby cardigan that I’ve passed on to my mother to assemble, and some thread-crocheted table runners (maybe tablecloths?) that hadn’t been finished. The balls of yarn had labels that suggested they were older than me.
I cannot get over how fine the yarns are and how long it must take to work such delicate items! I keep wondering about the woman who had made them, and why they’d been started but not completed. About what else she’d made in the past. And I’m really pleased that they have found their way to me. I will definitely finish the granny square blanket, but am not ambitious enough to say I might finish the thread crocheted pieces.
There were plenty of other assorted balls of yarn in the bag, many of which I’ll donate to Clare’s primary school to use for their winter knitting and crochet activities. I have kept a few balls for my own stash. Any suggestions as to what this ball of mohair might become are welcome!
Many thanks to Gina for the thread, yarn and other bits and pieces and for the lovely trip through time and associated wonderings. What will happen to my unfinished projects one day? Will they be passed on to one crafter then another, maybe to be completed by another, maybe not? Maybe I should just stick to one project at a time…
WOW! How generous of Gina and a lucky score for you x
Lara I’m just so glad they are with someone who understands what the heck they are! (eg not me!!!). Glad there were some treasures in there. My friend Jo will be thrilled to read this post… she procured the goods for me, apparently they belonged to a male workmate’s mother, so perhaps we’ll be able to find out more. It’s weird to think that one day your stuff may also be passed on to others… but probably your daughters will be keen to sort it through first, and hand it onto their daughters (eek!)
Make a neck warmer with the mohair.
That’s a nice lot of loot you have there, so much history! 🙂

Wow – what a find!
I love those crochet motifs – the cute half finished flower in the middle right of the first photo of motifs especially, (it’s very sweet) and the other photo of lots of motifs together looks amazing. (If any of that made any sense).
How nice that they should come to you – even if you’re not 100% sure where they came from!
you are so lucky! the bag contains a really treasure!

What a lovely treasure trove ! How nice for the person that began all this wonderful crochet to have it go to someone that can appreciate its time effort and value, maybe one day the items completed then displayed or used for all to admire. It would be great to know alittle about the lady and her name. I hope when the time comes all my unfinished projects will go to someone who can finish and appreciate them, as I don’t have a daughter.
