Vintage crochet Friday #45
Shawls. Other than ponchos, crocheted bikinis and granny squares, when I hear “crochet” I still often think “shawls”. The stitch pattern and motifs for the bottom/background shawl are divine, but I’d definitely choose a different colourway and ditch the fringe. I don’t think that we need fringes on our clothes nowadays. There are loads of beautiful crocheted shawls on Ravelry too. Who actually wears shawls? Do you? Maybe I need to crochet a shawl…
There are two in a cupboard at my place—-vintage at that.–Mum
I love love love wearing shawls. They were huge in the US a couple years ago when Jessica Simpson wore one on her Newlyweds show. I used to live in Upstate NY where it is very cold in the winters and grabbing a shawl was perfect for when I was sitting on the couch and there was a draft. I agree w/ the anti fringe statement, what a waste of yarn and the bottom shawl is the one that grabbed my attention.
I don’t wear shawls yet …. but I have one on my hook (EVA) and one on my needles (IHSBEL). I am not sure if I will wear them but I just had to make them.
Hi Mum! I left myself logged onto Mum’s computer last time I was up, and clearly she has now worked out how to comment on blog posts – as me! I know exactly which two shawls you are talking about by the way Mum.
I have had a love affair with shawls ever since, as a very young girl, I first saw the shawl my (paternal) grandmother made for my mom in the early 1950’s. I now have it and occasionally wear it, but in the interim years have also crocheted many a shawl for myself, using everything from gossamer lace-weight to warm, cuddly Homespun and everything in between. There is always an occasion for wearing a shawl!
I love the motifs on that bottom/background shawl you posted and am hoping you’ll share the publication it is from. I would love to see if I can find a copy and do one up, myself (sans fringe, of course).
Thanks so much.
Well of course I am a shawl lover ( although I prefer to call them ‘wraps’). When I was in India some years ago, all the men wore long rectangular shaped ‘shawls’ and I wanted one!. I bought several on my Indian travels then and still wear them today. I would love to crotchet a shawl and I love the motifs used in the red one. As ever L you are a source of inspiration.
