Remembering
Today is Anzac Day, when we remember the Australians and New Zealanders who have served and who are currently serving our country in combat.
My Pa fought in France in the First World War. He never spoke much about the war, but I was aware that he had fought and had schrapnel wounds and deafness partly related to explosions.
My uncle (Pa’s eldest son) fought in New Guinea in the Second World War, and his son has a senior role in the Australian Armed Forces today.
Listening to the Anzac Day dawn service and parade on the radio always makes me cry. We are remembering.
“Lest we forget.”
Thanks for sharing your familys Anzac connections. Lest we Forget!
My Grmpa also fought in WWI in France. He did share a couple of stories with us. He told us how his whole comapny was sick with influenza, a French farmer hid them in his barn for 2 weeks. He was in France for 2 years. We celcebrate Veterans Day on Nov.11 Also our Idependence Day is very honoring to our vets. it is always good to remind us that freedom does not come free. Thanks for sharing!!
Thanks for the current event/history lesson. That’s what I like about blogging–getting the rubber meets the road stories.
My grampy also served in WWI in France. No stories, but some pictures, and a couple of passes of off duty for good conduct. and I have a Joan of Arc medalian he brought back.
Anzac Day always makes me cry too.
My Dad served in Vietnam and although he came home relatively unscathed (he does get that rash that comes and goes as sung about in that song), it still makes me very emotional.
