First Brown Owls meet for 2009
Tuesday evening was the first meet of the revamped Brown Owls crafty club for this year. Rather than meeting at the clubhouse and having a different set project each meet (a truly massive workload for the organisers) we are meeting at a different location each time and bringing along our own crafty projects (although there are still craft kits available if you need one). We met at Stay Human in Richmond, which describes itself as an “ethical hub and merch makers”. It was a great crafty space, I took along cushions to sit on and had a glass of wine from the cafe downstairs. Lovely to greet familiar faces and meet some new ones! I took along some crochet (hardly surprising).
I’ve made a start on Clare’s Wool Eater Blanket. I found it a little tricky to get into the flow of the pattern at first, necessitating ripping out stitches a few times – much to the horror of onlookers! But now I’m in the groove, and I adore the way it is progressing. Stay Human has a badge making machine available, so I made a few badges using crafty photos I’ve taken. That was fun – I’m trying to think of other uses for badges (school fundraisers, kids birthday parties, etc) so that I can have an excuse to go back and make some more one day.
We ended the evening in the cafe downstairs and had coffee and creme brulee – one of my favourite desserts! It’s nice to be meeting up again, although I do miss the clubhouse. The opportunity to share my interest (obsession?) in craft has become very important to me over the past year. I’m so glad to have met you all, fellow crafters! And I’m so glad that we’re continuing to get together in a different, relaxed format.
That crochet pattern is gorgeous and your combination of colours just makes it.
I haven’t been able to get my head into getting to Brown Owls yet this year but hopefully I will at some stage.
We have our second Canberra Brown Owls meet this Sunday! We are doing mostly organised ones though – this week is stitchery.
I love that blanket. Wow. Might have to look into that pattern.
I think I just love that crochet. The colours are amazing. I know what you mean about being able to share the love of craft. I am suffering severe withdrawals this week. None of my day to day friends are remotely interested in what I do! I am really missing you and the girls.
Creme Brulee is my favourite dessert.
lookin’ good lara, love the colours!
your parcel should arrive tomorrow, keep your eyes peeled!
What beautiful crotcheting.
That is going to be an absolutely gorgeous blanket! I love the dimension it has and the color combination is stunning. Sharing our creative passion does make it that much more enjoyable, doesn’t it? I belong to a quilting guild and we learn so much from one another. Thanks for sharing your project with us.
So lovely to chat Lara.
I really LOVE that blanket.
Dear Lara,
I dropped by your blog to let you know that it was your encouragement that finally pushed me over the blogstarting edge. THANK YOU! And now I must thank you again for your latest posts. Once again, I get a thrill from your daughter pix—cute as cupcakes! And sigh for the Brown Owl community–I’d be there to enjoy the visits, but the commute from Maine is just prohibitive, dontcha know… And then finally the Wool Eater Blanket (Kudos to Sarah London!!). Maybe I’ll add it to my Ravelry queue, but I’m not sure I have the skill. (But who knows, I didn’t think I could figure out how to do a blog either!)
So…if there’s anything I can encourage you with, I’d love to return the favor! 🙂
Wendy
WOW! That’s so amazinly beautiful! I love the colors you’ve chosen, it almost makes me want to crochet (though I’m really no good at it!)
I’m so sad to have missed Brown Owls 🙁 so now I’ll be the stalker on the website so I can sign up first for the next meet.
Love the blanket and can’t wait to see it grow, and maybe even have a touch!
I love that crochet square! It has a bit of a stained glass feel to it. I’m so excited about my first Brown Owls meetup next month in Brisbane!
Hey Lara – thanks for the Birthday wishes – how did you know? I haven’t had time to post about it yet – planning on some bloggy pressies for people, which I can’t organise myself to do yet, so no birthday post! Ditto ditto on the lovely colouring for the blanket – I still ooh and ahh over your vintage tablecloth too!
Would you be able to tell me where I can get a copy of this amazing pattern?
It’s called the Wool-Eater Blanket, as was available on Sarah London’s website (do a google search for her). I have also seen it called Bavarian Crochet. Good luck!
