Small hats
Last week I bought a fantastic hat pattern and despite having more than one crochet WIP I whipped out some remnant half-balls of yarn and my hooks and made a start. My yarn wasn’t the one recommended in the pattern, but it was a similar weight, so I gave it a go. I was making it to fit Clare but it seemed a bit small, so I did a few extra increase rows and a few extra for depth, then did the adult size for the visor. I think I mucked it up.
Not too bad from this angle, but that is after LOTS of stretching to get it on her head. And from another angle…
It’s all a bit rasta really, and she even has a bun in there. So I went back to my hook and yarn stash, and picked up a ball of thicker yarn (Patons Jet, a wool/alpaca blend) and decided that this time I would follow the pattern and do the child size again.
The proportions are better, but this time it fits Stella. There is NO WAY it would go anywhere near a six-year-old head!
It’s even a bit firm on a 19-month-old head. So WHAT am I doing wrong? I know that yarn substitution has its hazards, but I didn’t think that I crocheted so tightly I’d be so way off gauge. Maybe I’ll try the adult size next and hope that it fits Clare….
It will be super cute when you figure it out.
Hi Lara
I have made them too, I think I bought about 8 patterns all up.. I have altered them to work with 8 ply and 12 ply.. It took a lot of attempts until I worked it out.. I use a different size hook too.. There are pics on my blog.
Jo
cute hats. Can’t help with your dilemma though?? good luck. Your girls are gorgeous.
When I made a hat for my adjunct granddaughter (from the same Jet as your second cap), I based it on Dylan’s Baby Hat in Alterknits — but I cast on enough for an 18″ circumference, even though the pattern specified 16″ for 6-12 months (Aurelia turns 1 in a couple of weeks, and she’s right on the median for her age, size-wise) because we had measured her head — it was actually a bit larger than 18″!
I guess the cap is worked from the crown … maybe you need to measure Clare’s head at a few different levels (like a topographic map) and adjust the increases to match?
It’s a **very** cute pattern and your girls are really adorable 🙂
I would go with a bigger hook.
Oh no dont tell me that as i just bought that pattern (and another one) from her Etsy store the other day too!!!
I am going to use Rowan Hand Knit Cotton and see how i go. I will let you know 🙂
Those hats are sooo cute, and the pictures of your girls are wonderful! I can’t help you on your issues, but it seems like others are able to. Good luck! 🙂
Good luck. When you used a different yarn it is an adventure. I love the yarn colours in the 1st hat.
Your top came out beautifully in your previous post. Well done.
Really cute caps for the girls, love the colours. Maybe the problem isn’t so much you as it is the pattern? You seem to be an experienced crocheter so maybe the pattern needs tweaking.
Hi Lara. As i said i just bought this pattern and have now completed the hat. I made the 12 – 24 months size and it worked a treat! You can check out a photo here if you like (not on my blog yet as its a present) http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd191/MarchMums/Lana/DSC05758.jpg Please keep in mind that my daughter is nearly 4 so she would need the next size up. I used Rowan all Seasons Cotton (i put the wrong name down last time)
