Bedrest = learn to crochet
One of my work colleagues is 27 weeks pregnant and has just been prescribed strict bedrest in hospital. What to do while lying almost flat on your back for at least five weeks? Crochet, of course!
I whipped up this drawstring bag (following this tutorial) and popped some yarn, a crochet hook and instructions inside.
She has been watching me crochet in my breaks at work with great interest – so maybe now she will become a hooker too!
What a fantastic idea! I couldn’t think of a worse punishment than having to lie still for five weeks…. and crochet hooks are less dangerous in bed than sewing needles (which is what I’d probably be using to keep my hands busy!).
What a great idea! Love the bag (and fabric used) and from a fellow hooker, there is nothing better to fill in your spare time!
How funny. I just told an 8 1/2 moth pregnant friend that I would teach her how to crochet since she was just put on maternity leave by her doc!
It’s been found to create the same Alpha waves that deep meditation does, so it’s good for both mom and baby!
I can’t wait to see what she has made – a very nice gesture on your behalf!
you are so thoughtful Lara – I can only imagine what it would be like to spend that length of time confined (I vaguely remember an aussie telly movie with rachel griffiths about exactly this, something like waiting at the royal??) when we do our jacket making we’ll have to do a bit of crochet too. I can do the most basic of stitches but am very keen to learn!
really great for your mum in waiting as it’s very gentle on the posture compared to knitting (and I love the comment above about it’s meditative powers). maybe she could do a bit of needlecraft too – and a laptop for blogging!!!!
What a sweet thoughtful gift and lovely colours as well.
man i think the only thing more unpleasant than being 27 weeks pregnant is being 27 weeks pregnant and confined to bed. D: what a thoughtful gift.
That is so sweet, what a great gift 🙂
Such a sweet gift Lara 🙂 Do you have any ideas what a 19 week pregnant woman can do who has just fractured the wrist of her dominant hand and is in a cast for 6-8 weeks? Not crochet, that’s for sure! Boo hoo!
Love pink ‘Tula Pink’ – love it so much I don’t think I can’t cut it up.
What a thoughtful thing to do.
I had a friend in the same predicament and we were always bringing her books and magazines and Sudoko puzzles!
I hope your friend gets the hang of it soon and is able to get lots done before bub arrives.
That is such a wonderful idea Lara! I can’t imagine having to sit still for so long. Poor girl. I hope she really gets the bug.
I came up with a FAFF bag idea today (sorry 2 post in 1 day on my blog due to a blog thieving site-it’s in the earlier post of the day). Maybe she could do with something like that in a few weeks as a pick-me-up?
Hi Lara,
Am loving your blog. Have seen this pattern pop up a couple of times however the link appears to be broken, can you redirect me to a functioning link for the drawstring bag please. Many thanks for all your inspiration! Amanda
