No hat, no play!
Every childcare, kinder and school kid in Australia knows this rule – no hat, no play! I’ve just been testing Nikki’s kids hat pattern so now Clare has another summer hat to choose from.
The pattern went together beautifully, although I found it harder to assemble a kid’s hat than an adult one because all the curves are a bit stronger, if you know what I mean. They seem more concave and more convex when they are smaller pieces of fabric. I originally cut the widest brim, but it was a bit too wide for Clare, so I reduced the width by an inch or so.
The fabrics are all from Anna Maria Horner’s Chocolate Lollipop range from a couple of seasons ago. There is a matching dress all cut out on my desk awaiting assembly. Don’t you always make/choose the accessories before the dress too?
I should have pressed this more and stuffed the crown before photographing it! In real life there are no puckers. I love the way that the spots radiate from the centre of the hat tip.
Although the hat was a little big at first, Nikki’s pattern has excellent tips for sizing it properly. The ribbon worked a treat! It’s still a fraction large (no fault of the pattern but of my failure to measure Clare’s head properly before I started) but quite wearable, so she’ll get a few years more out of this hat (I’ll unpick the ribbon when it becomes too tight). If you pop over here and leave a comment you might win the pattern – but be quick, it will be for sale on the website any day now. And lucky me – another pattern is on its way to me for testing as I type!
Its absolutely beautiful. The print and yo-yo trim suit your model perfectly! The ribbon for resizing is a nifty trick … though its not something I’d ever need to try out for my boys, who both have large crowns. I’ve been waiting excitedly for Nikki’s new pattern, so I can make the boys nice kiddie hats. The last kindergarten hat was an adult fishing hat that I appliqued a patch to. I did have a laugh when Mr HB asked where I bought a man’s hat with a digger on it!!
lovely as always, both your sewing and the model!
I’ve made many hats over the years but only from basic patterns. Looking forward to using this professional pattern and Nikki’s tips.
This looks stunning, good pattern and good job.
what an adorable hat! too bad my little girl will not wear hats as she should!
Claire is so like u! Love the fabric choice and yr embellishments soften it and make it younger as well. Great job
YOU ARE SO CLEVER!
Lovely hat!
We have the SSS in most nursery schools here in the UK if the sun is shining. It takes as long to make sure each child has cream on as the actual playtime lasts. Back when I was little I hated hats and wouldn’t wear a thing on my head. I think since then, sunburn is far more common. Thinning of the ozone layer?
It’s gorgeous! Clare is such a cutie. I think I need to make one of these!
Too stinking cute!! (one of my favorite sayings). If my girls were still little I would have made this hat many times over. I have a feeling that after this particular post Nicole’s orders for this hat will increase! And they should.
It’s so beautiful. You are very clever Ms Thornberry.
Fantastic hats, I am going to buy both the adults and kids now, I am always trying to find the right hat to suit what I am wearing, and now I can make heaps in all sorts of colours and patterns!! And the kids can pick their fabrics and hopefully be happy wearing their hats!!
