The importance of working a gauge swatch

Chevron cardigan - take 2 by you.

I’ve been working on this chevron cardigan for Stella for around a week now.  The yarn is Smoothie by Patons Australia, an 8 ply acrylic (yes, a departure from my usual natural fibres preference).  I started off using a 3.5mm hook as specified in the pattern, but after a few rows (translation – 3 hours work) I just KNEW that the gauge was way off.  Had I worked a gauge swatch?  No, of course not!  So I got out the tape measure, and counted.  Yes, my stitches were way too small and it was no wonder that the resulting fabric was stiff and frankly quite unappealing.  So I decided to start again with a 4.5mm hook.  Look at the difference!  In the photo above, the bottom crochet is the attempt #1 in the 3.5mm hook.  The top crochet is attempt #2 in the 4.5mm hook.  You can really see the difference in length in this photo.

Chevron cardigan - 3.5mm hook vs 4.5 mm hook by you.

Much drapier, and almost 4 inches longer in circumference!  Way better.  I’m so glad that I started again.  The pattern says it will fit size 1-2 years, so even if it does seem large now, Stella will grow into it.  I’ve been taking this to work to do in my breaks – I can get one row done in a tea break and a couple at lunch time.

fabric stash, sewing

Share your stash week – Sunday

There is no possible way that one week would be long enough for me to share my stash.  The shelves are very crowded!  Thankfully Tamara is going to pick up where Mikes is leaving off, by starting up a regular Sunday Stash meme.  Yay!  So, onto the next instalment in June’s fabric stash…

June's stash - 80s A by you.

Mostly John Kaldor prints, once again.  These are all slippery polyester.

June's stash - 80s B by you.

And some more slippery polyester (with some crepe on the left).

June's stash - 80s C by you.

And these two are definitely 80s colours.  So, stay tuned for more fabric stash love next week!

miscellaneous, musings, this is ...

This is … my favourite kitchen tool

Hubby is actually the best thing in our kitchen – he cooks most of the meals.  My specialty is meringues.  But the best kitchen tool?  I’ve chosen two.

This is ... my favourite kitchen tool by you.

Two very simple things – a Good Grips potato peeler (it is so easy to use) and a “kaas schraper” (hubby’s parents are Dutch, so there are a few dutch expressions in use at our house).  The cheese scraper is such a great invention!  I can never slice cheese thinly enough with a knife, but you just drag this across the top of a block of cheese and you have lovely thing slices.  And a little less dangerous for me than using a knife (although the blade on this is pretty sharp too – my fingers are not completely unscathed).  Thanks to Sharon for this week’s theme and to Angela for hosting “this is”.

And while I am thanking people, I need to send a massive THANK YOU to all those who responded to my last post.  You all gave me more to think about and such lovely encouragement to continue with my blog.  I’ve decided that I blog for me, but I also do blog for you!  It’s that community thing.  I am back to focusing more on the positives – I think that maybe writing that post was therapeutic.  And I’ll try to remember Hoppo Bumpo’s words – “blogging without obligation could be very liberating!”
