Sweetpea Cardigan
Do you remember me whinging about my learning curve when I started crocheting Clare’s Sweetpea Cardigan? Unbelievably enough, it is actually finished!
I’m not going to worry about doing the silk ribbon embroidery on it as per the pattern instructions, as I think that it looks rather lovely as it is (and I’m over it).
The buttons really set it all off nicely – they’re from Spotlight – and the lacy edging was incredibly easy to do but quite effective.
And see those sleeves? I crocheted FIVE sleeves for this cardigan – that is how many goes it took for me to get it right! Lots of frogging going on there, I tell you! But in the end I learned a considerable amount about gauge, drape, yarn substitution, reading schematics, and measuring as you go. If I made it again I could do it in half the time.
The main thing? It fits, she likes it and she’ll wear it! Yay! Oh, for those who like project details – the yarn is Harmony, by Bendigo Woollen Mills which is a wool/cotton/lycra mix (and has unfortunately now been discontinued); the pattern is Sweetpea Cardigan by Candi Jensen, from Interweave Crochet Spring 2006.
It’s gorgeous! I love the color and the fit looks perfect. I love the lacy edging.
I crochet a little, too, but I’ve never ventured clothing. It’s a different beast! However, I have a cardigan on my list for my little guy, and a poncho for my sweet girl, AFTER I finish a few summer items for myself! I’ll make sure to pay attention to gauge, trying it on, etc.!
Lara, it’s beautiful! Clare looks so cute in it. And gosh she looks like you!
wow it ‘s so lovely and a fine job of crochet! Perfect colour for Clare too! Certainly one to save later on in the keepsake box. Thanks for sharing.

wow…. it is really nice, especially the lacy edging
she looks like a little princess, well done!!
It’s beautiful, Lara. Gorgeous colour and the buttons finish it off perfectly. Clare looks lovely in it (cute skirt too!).
Awesome as always lara ! Clare has such an angelic little face.
Wow! Extremely impressive. Makes me want to take up crocheting although I have enough UFOs! Gorgeous colour too.
Oh Lara, it turned out beautifully….the lacy edges are just perfect!
Hmmm must practice my crochet!
It’s lovely, and so is your model!
Its such a beautiful colour and the edging was worth all the trouble
Beautiful 🙂
Really nice work and the cardigan looks lovely on little Clare! Your five sleeves reminded me of a lady who knitted four sleeves for a jumper because the pattern had instructions for short and long sleeves. She was just wondering how she could fit all the sleeves to one jumper 🙂 .
Oh it is soooo cute! I love it!!! And your little one is just the cutest thing ever!
That sweater is absolutely gorgeous! I wish I could crochet clothes…just can’t imagine it. It was years before I learned to read a pattern. LOL! I can crochet a mean doily though. Lynn
Wow – you have such patience!! Re-doing the sleeve so many times would do my head in completely – probably why I don’t crochet. And what a fabulous result!
This is such a cute sweater! I really like this, great job! I can crochet a little and I can knit a little :O)…I like to crochet better I think and this would be something I would love to make! But I want it in my size! :O)
Do you still have this pattern? I am going in circles with Ravelry and Interweave trying to find it!
The pattern is Sweetpea Cardigan by Candi Jensen, from Interweave Crochet Spring 2006. I suggest contacting Interweave Press to see if it is available (although I have a feeling that they have been sold?) or else try eBay or similar for that issue of Interweave Crochet.
