Today’s Woman Granny Squares
Warning: this is a very photo-heavy post!
My mother found this with some of my grandmother’s things, and since I am interested in crochet, she has passed it on to me. It’s “Today’s Woman – Granny Squares”, from 1978. Here is a selection of what it has to offer.
Check that cover photo! This top comes with the tag line “Love that Soft Look – pretty peasant blouson, in peaches and cream colour”. Hmmmm. Some of the other adult’s clothing:
Can’t say I’m dashing off to grab my crochet hook for any of these ones. Maybe homewares is more promising …
Some of these are quite funky – and in other colour combinations, I think they’d look terrific! What about the kid’s clothes?
Once again, I think some of these would look great in the right yarns and colours. But I don’t think that anything can be done to save this:
Some things are so bad they’re good. This is just bad.
That last one had me laughing! A few things do look “doable” for today. A few others weren’t ever doable, even back then!
Oh. My. Goodness. That tablecloth is really something else!
What a hoot! (…I really like that daisy pattern rug, though!)
You know, the one model with the pageboy looks very familar, I wonder if I bought this issue way back when. I started buying craft magazines when I was a teenager and I’ve never thrown them out, could be I have it.
I recently received my MIL’s stash of leftover yarn and her patterns. A couple of little booklets were from the Red Cross and one was for knitting patterns for civilian women and children and the other was for knitting garments for men and women in the army so I guess her booklets went back a bit.
I’ve posted a few pictures in my blog if you want to go take a look. I’m not sure when these patterns were published but I don’t think women today would put the labour into the little dresses or layettes for children.
Okay, seriously! Atleast half those tops are back in style again! Really! I would wear several of them in differet colors/yarns. Those granny square ones (especially numbers 1, 4, and 5 for women) would be awesome in a solid color. Make fun of me all you want, people, but I am telling you… the 80s are back. I am sooo not old enough for that to be happening, btw.
Hahaha! Got to love the 70’s. I do like those pillows thought, especially the diagonal square pillow.
This is hysterical! Thanks for sharing!
What goes around comes around! I could see myself making all the pillows on the bed. Even the color combinations don’t look that bad!
Fantastic bit of pattern sabotage Lara – I have the same mag and thought the same thing when I unearthed it from my mum’s stash.
And have you guessed who the model is in pic number 3? ………It’s Pam Dawber aka Mindy from ‘Mork and Mindy’.
I’ve noticed her in a few of my vintage mags from the 70’s.
Geez now I’m showing me age.
ps – all afghans reinvented as jackets or shawls should be banned!
Oh boy – Love those outfits! They’re just so flattering.
Pam Dawber! I KNEW that she looked familiar (but I had a matching haircut – although I was about ten years old).
OMG it’s Mindi! Well spotted Donna!
Some of that stuff isn’t too bad … but the tablecloth is just WRONG.
