Bits and pieces
I’m still working on Christmas presents, but have a few other bits and pieces that I wanted to share. I embroidered these Christmas ornaments when I was in primary school. The little house is still waiting for a ribbon to hang it with! Clare found them today when we put up the Christmas tree.
These fabrics are all by Lara Cameron of Kirin & Co. They’re original designs hand-screened here in Melbourne, on beautiful fabric. I’m saving them to use in something special.
And lastly, I am working on some crochet. I started this little dress for Stella some time ago, but I’m getting a bit stuck in the textured pattern used for the skirt. It is easy to lose where I’m up to due to the yarn texture – I think I’ve introduced a few increases where there shouldn’t be any. The pattern is the Baby Blues dress from Crochet Today. Once the skirt is done I’ll work an edging around the neckline, sleeves and hem.
It’s probably a really bad choice of colour for a red-head. I keep on forgetting Stella’s hair colour when buying yarn/fabric – at least she doesn’t have much hair yet, so will be able to get away with it!
You did that when you were a kid? That is amazing! I couldn’t do anything that good as an adult!
Wow, what an amazing talent you have! I wish I can be half as good as you are. Great items!
Lara, were you some child prodigy or something?
Thanks ladies! I wasn’t a prodigy at all – I figure I must have been in about grade 5 or 6 when I did them, and had plenty of help from my mother! They took me ages! And don’t look too closely – they’re not that well embroidered!
Lara, you have been catfy all along by the looks of things – that great stitching at school ! I love the fabrics – they will be hard to cut.
oh dear – obviously you have been crafty – not catfy. Excuse me for my dreadful typing.
Hi Lara
You are such an inspiration………I don’t comment much but I always check in and this week has been absolutely yummy – all those bags and now the cute decorations!
Oh wow! Those fabrics are gorgeous! I love the one on the left bottom corner. It reminds me of the inside of a computer, but flowery. All of them are beautiful though.
Also, I am really impressed with your embroidery! At 6th grade I was still trying to get all my cross stitches overlapping the same direction.
What lovely bits and pieces! I was crafty as a child too. If I looked around hard enough at my parents house I am bound to find something fo the similar sort. I looked closely and they still look great!
WOW Lara what beautiful hand made things to still have from your childhood. They’re gorgeous.
I made the same ornaments when I was a kid. Still have them, and the ones my Grandmother made along with me. Thanks for bringing back the great memory.
I have a red headed daughter, and I decided early on to ignore all the comments about what a red head could or couldn’t wear. She only gets to be a little girl once, so she should have a chance to wear all the wonderful little girl colors. When she gets older and gets picky about her clothes, she can then decide what she thinks about how a color looks with her hair and skin coloring. I think it is helping her to not have a complex about red hair.
I love the little childhood treasures you still have. I have a couple ornaments that I made that are still in existence too. They were beaded bells.
Nothing wrong with redheads wearing that colour!!!!!
And the ornaments are adorable!

I just saw the embroidered ornaments. I have that pattern! I bought it in 1977 and made the entire set as a gift for my then boyfriend and now husband of almost 32 years. There are about 10 different designs in all (I think) and we display them every year with the garland around our staircase landing in the front hall.
It was amazing to see them on your blog.
